why does he dig?

My nearly 2 year old arab baby is constantly digging holes in my field!!
He has dug a hole about a foot deep under the tree and now they are in a different part he has started digging a big hole there too, grrrr!
It is funny because when we bought this place the previous owner's horses used to dig holes in the fields too but up to this summer mine never have.
Any ideas please why and how I can stop him before he tunnels out!!

is he also licking the ground? or just digging? and could it be the field if the old owners horses dug?

No, he doesn't lick I don't think anyway! None of my other horses do it. It's very odd!

My horse does it out of frustration, but he's a headshaker and its obvioulsy a display of discomfort
