This cropped up in my other thread but i cant work it out.

I took over two donks when we moved here. A 6 year old male and a just turned 3 year old female.

When we moved in, they hadnt been mucked out in god knows how long. I think she;d just kept throwing clean bedding in. I took 15 barrows out and theyre now on a decent bed of straw.

The female is obsessed about rolling on the concrete in the barn. When i let them out in the morning, she stops dead and rolls in the middle of the barn. When i bring them in she does the same. Shes sleeping on her bed at night and generally seems normal.. but why roll on concrete?! :P

I was quite horrified when she first did it tbh but judging by some replies to my other thread, other donks do this too?!

Perhaps its better for itchy coats.... do they shed like horses....

I really havent a clue!!

Don't know about donkeys doing this but there was a miniature horse stallion that used to do this at my college. Even if he was tied up he would go down, we used to panic about him getting caught up but his owner said not the worry he always does it

No idea why.

my shiteland does it too, either on the concrete yard or if that is out of bounds, he'll do it on buckets or attempt to roll on the wheelbarrow. If both yard and bucket are available he'll roll on the yard with a bucket on his head. I always assumed it was because he is simple.

My first thought was itchy too T.

I know you have probably already thought of this but she doesn't have any unwelcome little beasties on her does she?!

I don't know much about them I'm afraid xx

I knew you'd have checked that but thought I should mention it xx

Maybe she's just weird hehe! Hopefully one of our donkey people will come along to help. Might just be that she's a tough little soul and wants to scratch herself.

mine does it all year round, so assume it is nothing to do with moulting (and he doesn't have any unwelcome visitors as far as I know, certainly have never seen anything untoward and am a bit obsessed by that sort of thing so do check on a fairly fanatical basis)

My shetland that has quite bad sweet itch loves to roll on concrete, when we wak across the yard his legs buckle, he also likes to roll in the woodchip menage and on any gravel which believe me when bearing inm ind he is supposed to be for my 4 year old son it's not good! I think we have mastered it now but it must releive them better than the soft ground.

My donkey does this, and I have a friend whose donk does the same. My lad has a big field shelter which he shares with his pony friend, the back half is bedded down. He nearly always lies on the concrete part

, and he does it whether the pony is in there or not so nothing to do with her. When we were having some building work done if he was let onto the yard he used to roll in the big pile of building sand and gravel. Think its just a donkey thing.

My miniature does this as well - who knows why. He also chooses to sleep on concrete even when he has a nice bed available
