why does my horse grunt when he trots?

have wondered about this ever since we got him but have never asked anybody before, he does this really deep grunting when he's playing, mostly when trotting and never under saddle, iv'e always thought he was castrated late, he's not a rig but has many stallion traits, could this be one of them or is something wrong that i'm missing?

Well, it's relevant if if the normal sheathy noise. It's not dangerous though, just mildly embarrassing.

That could still be sheath noise. They do it when they're mildly tense. Both geldings and stallions. Mine do it when they pass unknown horses out hacking.

that's interesting Bakewell, he only seems to do it when he stomps around playing with Shadow and gets a bit macho but it's really loud. you have Spanish horses too yes? it's not a breed thing?

Not breed specific, have noticed all sorts doing it. Many male horses do it as a "I'm not quite relaxed" or a sort of "hey, I've got man bits, you can't push me around". It's quite a mild behaviour (ie not massively aggressive or serious stress) from what I've seen though.

That said spanish horses do like to show off their varied trot skills so that might be a factor.
 
LOL! Reading the above chuckling... yes normal and any boy from any breed can do it really. It's just a man thing!
 
I have two "grunters", highly embarrassing and randomly timed at best. One is a 9yo ISH, the other a 5yo warmblood x welsh sec A. Neither gelded late.
It isn't as embarrassing as my big lad letting off...wind.. every time he jumps. But. Only if its over 90cm, below this and he doesn't do it. I say thats divine intervention telling me to stick at 90cm ;)

Makes me chuckle thinking that its them saying they have man bits, my boys are the most effeminate geldings ever!!
 
Oh and cleaning makes no difference so laugh at anyone who says that.

Farting when jumping? Pelvic floor exercises? :D

Mine would wee in front of the judge and wave it around for good measure afterwards... I am never sure who is more embarrassed at these events, me, the judge or everyone watching.

I can vouch that cleaning makes no difference - tried this! I'll have a chat to the big lad and see if he's up for some pelvic floor work!

Lol @ weeing in front of the judge - mine will refuse to wee anywhere other than his stable, all day events and nothing, he will drag your arm off to get in his stable soon as you get in. Friend of mine has a TB who is forever letting it hang out, all the time, any situation, usually waving it around also, she's in a constant state of mortification.
 
So considerate!

My lad was so relaxed about weeing he would wee anywhere... side of the road about to cross, mid gallop on the beach (as in, stop, assume position, resume gallop) on the trailer, in someone elses stable. Literally.... anywhere.

LOL that made me have a proper chuckle. I could picture the gallop. stop. wee. resume. Suppose thats a sign he was relaxed?!

Lol true... my OH makes some ridiculous "manly" noises at the gym. I think he thinks it helps him do more with weights.. I just think he looks comical!
 
My trotter x is very noisy, lead him out and he's like a bloodhound, head down sniffing and snorting as he goes, give him a nose twitching scratch and he makes this snuffling sound, almost as if he has a cold, ask him to do more than trot and he squeals like a girl,turn him out after a few days in and he farts and squeals like an idiot as he takes off, my baby cob farts when he is unsure of something, horses, got to love them
