Why does my horse...............??????????????

Blue holds Ellie's lead rope when her head collar has just been put on. As soon as I tell him to drop it so I can put his on he does.

He gets very moody sometimes and throws things. Normally buckets but can be anything. He tried to chuck a sledgehammer at me once but couldn't pick it up high enough! He chucked a half brick over the gate at me once and last week got me smack in the face with a clod of earth

This has probably been done to death, but I was thinking today whilst mucking out my horse's stable that maybe if people put on the forum odd things their horses do, then there might be people on here who can enlighten them as to the reasons why. I also thought it would be interesting to find out odd things other peoples horses do, and see if others horses do the same odd things. (if you get what I mean!!!)

So i'll start, my horse always holds up a front leg when he does a wee

!?!?

he might do this to to stop it splashing on the back of his front feet, especially if he wee's where he gets splashback! awww!
knew a horse who used to dance with his front feet when he splashed by his own pee - awww!

one of my foals developed the delightful habit of laying down when you pick up his right fore to pick it out, think it stems from me always picking his feet out when he was laid down as a tiny foal! (didnt make him lay down just made the most of the opportunity when he was having a snooze!) oops! luckily hes nearly out of the habit now!
also hav one that puts her feed bucket in her water bucket, she also does this with rugs! & if shes being ignored will bang her top & bottom lips together to make a popping noise!
im sure they do plenty of other odd things that just seem normal to me now!

My mare also hates walking through the mud and unfortunitly for her she has too as its thick! even when we have been out riding she hates going back in the field and will just stand there whilst i have to coax her in!!

The coblet starts grooming me when i brush/stroke rub her

also if she dosent get grazing in the summer (strip grazing) she gets in a strop and bucks at me!!!

They all follow me round when i poo pick if they dont have thier hay first

Sunny can get the lid off feed buckets and feed bins but I know exactly why he does that. There used to be a horse at the riding school that loved to "ping" wiper blades on lorries if the trek leader had to go up to a lorry driver on a hack. I read about another horse that used to suck the wing mirrors of cars it passed. Weird!

Why does Star always f@rt when I pick up her back feet? Not the front ones, only the back.

Incidentally, horses wave their legs around when eating because it's a 'leftover' from needing to keep on the move when eating to avoid being eaten by sabretooth tigers.

my horse falls asleep if i brush or plate her mane. i also have full blown conversations with my mare, i can ask her a question and she always answers with some sort of neigh, people on my yard always laugh at us! hehe

laso..She is the only horse on the yard who can escape under her chain thats accross her door, she only does it when im not looking (went to the loo the other day and came back and she was in the middle of the yard enjoying someones haynet!)

The other thing she does is she picks up her hoof when im picking her feet out (sooo cute) she knows which on i am gonna do next so she picks it up ready for me!!!

I love her sooo much

Why does my horse tip her bucket, slide her foot under it, and rest the bucket on her hoof while she eats? She used to do it if I added too much water - but now she just has a big bucket of Graze On, and she still does it.

And why will she eat hay from a bucket, but not from the floor - same section of hay, same day, but wouldn't touch the handful I put on the floor to keep her amused while I finished tidying up. She'd eaten it happily from the bucket 30 seconds before. Bloody princess, that horse!

Love her really tho

Dylan waves his front feet about when he's eating (only feeds, though, not hay); and if you have food, or he thinks you do, he'll pick up a front foot and wave it - it's like he's begging. He headbutts me and itches his face on me if I start to brush his neck ... and chases me round the yard after I've ridden until I let him itch his face on my back/shoulder - he's in a D-ring bit so it's not exactly a painless experience lol.
He has the unusual ability to raise one eyebrow, and sometimes curls his top lip (in an Elvis-like manner) and sighs at me.

My favourite thing though, is when I pick up his headcollar to leave at night, and say "goodnight, Dylan", and he sticks his nose over the door for me to give it a kiss

He's just generally quite weird and wonderful.

I thought mine was normal but I just remembered one.

Lick the trailer, not just his own, other peoples if he is tied up to them too

but won't go near a salt lick, much prefers mud.

Flo will back up to you and pin you again the wall or gate until you rub her bum! if you move, she will back up to you again (this can go on for ages! until she has had enough of bum rubs!!) she also has this massage brush thing, and the last couple of times i've used it on her back she turned and started to groom me too!
