Why does no where do grass livery any more?

The yard I was on stopped doing grass livery, so I moved my horse to a rented field.

I really miss having a manege, and finding it increasingly difficult to ride when it is dark, or wet and slippery.

I have been looking around, but no where seems to do grass livery anymore! I know there can't be too much money in it, but my horses prefer living out, and I think it is better for a horse to live out (if they can) - so why can't I find a livery yard that does grass livery??

I don't do grass livery.

have not got enough grazing
make no money out of grass liveries for the work put into the land
they eat full time and owners rarely pick up poo.

I own my yard and I would never do 24 hr turnout in winter the damage to the soil structure would be too great and it almost irrepareable if you allow too much poaching .

^5
i also don't do summer grass liveries, my parts go out over night in the summer and in day time, that way grass not poached.

As i mention many time .

Now as a yo I see grass livery as

  • horse owner gets horse fed 24 7 by the yo (grass)
  • horse owner has cheap bills yo gets little money for the work and up keep for the yard
  • poo everywhere not picked up
  • the yard is not kept as neat and tidy as when its part or full/ diy

How many want access to a stable for different reasons but paying to use one, so on grass livery there might not be access to one.

We have a yard that does grass here, its really popular and the grazing is always amazing, green and lush year round.. Acres and acres throughout the village!
Nice little yard with tack room and standings plus a menage and jumps paddock.. £150 pcm which includes hay and feed. Use of school/jumps is £50 a year for grass customers.

So does exisit yes:D

That's fair enough, if you don't have the grazing for 24/7 turnout, then the horses probably are going to trash the field and fencing though.

It's just a shame that there isn't enough land to give the horses the most natural environment.

I know my horse is currently very happy in his 6 acre field with 2 other horses. The field is never trashed and there is always plenty for them to eat and lots of space to run around.

Maybe it's just me being selfish wanting all the facilities!

It's not about the price. It's what I want for my horse! I would be very happy to pay £25 a week!

If price not an issue then why don't you find a yard that offers DIY with all that you want?

Grass livery round here is £30 or over a week and limited to summer months so come autumn you have to go DIY anyway. Also school hire for an hour is £15 to £20 so when you consider that if you want to use the school several times a week then DIY is actually good value for money.

I pay 210 PCM for grass livery, however includes my haylage in winter, my chaff year round, and the yo does all the poo picking, morning rug changes and morning feeds. I couldn't have my boy in as, despite being a tb, he is much better out - he has pssm so he stays much less stiff when out all the time. I do have an emergency stable, and I go every day to check on him at least.

All the liveries at ours are grass - the yo doesn't do this as a full time job, so she does her poo picking by machine on weekends, and then just mornings an evening feeds for her own ones. Costs to maintain the land, but we have a winter sacrifice field, and 20 acres for 3 horses and 2 ponies...

does anyone know of anywhere in Milton Keynes? I'm moving their in September time and need somewhere for my little cob to go. I physically cant manage mucking out etc, so would like him out 24/7. I'd prefer a school and some facilities, but he only 3yr old so its not essential right now.

I'm getting a bit worried reading this, I currently have him on grass livery 5 mins walk from my house, huge fields, automatic waters, access to a stable and storage etc. I was really hoping to find similar :(

I do grass livery but as others have said, it isn't a cheap option. You need twice as much land so you can rest it and keep it in decent condition, and we have all seen what happens to overstocked land in a wet year. Grazing land needs way more maintenance than stables, so I charge at least £120 pcm which is cheap and includes home grown fodder in winter. 6 or 7 horses on my 13 acres is plenty, whereas with DIY and stabled in winter I could cope with 10. Do the maths :)
