why does this weather make people drive like absolute idiots!!!!

ARGH!!! i've had enough of it now, yep its a little bit snowy up here, roads have been clear but some people insist on driving at 10 miles an hour on perfectly fine 60 roads.

yesterday a car pulled out on me, proper dangerously, causing me to have to brake and then didnt bother to try and get her speed up, just toodled along at 20 ish, now im not being funny, but its a fast road with lots of bends and driving behind someone like that will get the ar*e end of your car caved in!

is anyone else getting fed up of it or is it just me!
 
No, I'm fed up too! I followed someone at 15mph on a main road with no snow this morning. Lots of snow on the pavements, but the road was clear.
 
We have no roads around here safe enough to drive at 60mph right now. If we did then agree there is nothing worse than some idiot pulling out and then crawling along.

That aside, people should only drive at the speeds they feel comfortable with in these conditions otherwise that too is asking for trouble.

My other pet hate when it comes to driving is those who indicate then think they therefore have the god given right to just pull out regardless...

I'm fed up of people roaring up behind me when I'm tootling along at 20mph looking out for slippery patches. You will be delighted to know that I haven't even ventured out on the roads the last few days. And if you are young just remember that not everyone's reaction times are as quick as yours, so we need to drive slower. A little bit of consideration and patience goes a long way towards avoiding accidents.

It's not just the weather, in your eyes I would always drive like an idiot.

I don't mind anybody driving slowly, I think they should go at the speed they feel comfortable with. But like the OP I definitely HATE it when people pull out from a side road in front of you and proceed to crawl along. That is plain dangerous. Pull out by all means, when it is safe to do so!
 
Its not just you know how you feel... road i go down in small at some parts and its a 60mps, but in this weather and at night or fog i take my time... good job i did. Other week i almost got hit head on. If he had not have moved over abit he would have hit me head on , but he took my mirrow off. Hit it so hard it hit my window and there was just dust or what was a mirrow. he also never stopped.. I also had someone follow me home as i was ment to be to far behind him.(her) I was 2 cars away. It was other halfs car Bmw auto. Yes was fast on take off, but i kept well behind. no she put fog lights on stopped after and bend . At this point i over took as her other half did not look friendly...They followed me home and he got out asking what i was playing at. His wife was preggs and he had two kids in car. I said sorry what had i done ? he said speeding.......lol i then pointed out if i was going so bloody fast how did you keep up??? I then said take keys off her and drive the bloody car yourself , because she cant....lol

if you havent got quick reactions you shouldnt be on the road, regardless of age or the speed you drive. there is an old woman by us who thinks she owns the roads and has nearly run my oh off the road many times, its lucky he drives a truck that can go up banks, if that was me in my car she could quite easily force me off and down some rather steep banks.

driving at 20 on an otherwise safe fast road puts other drivers at risk, especially in bad weather, as it forces other drivers to take evasive action ie braking harshly which heightens the risk of skidding, and for some agressive drivers can piss them off and cause them to drive aggressively and put others in danger.
 
You seriously want people to drive faster in this??? Ive nearly been side swiped and splatted into loads of times in the last few weeks. Im in the midlands, so we havent had that much snow, but the hoar frost we have today is vile.
Please bare in mind that Im 27, so not all old people drive slow and not all young people are boy racers! I like being alive (most of the time) so I drive to the road conditions, if there is black ice you can be damn sure Im not going any faster than 15mph!
 
Oh my god this is my pet hate at the moment as well!!! I have been complaining about it at work all day today. This morning commuting there was people on the M6 motorway doing 30mph in the inside lane when the raod was absolutly fine, they cause just as much problems as people still doing 80 in the fast lane when its covered in snow, ice and slush! Then today going down a hill on minor road very icy so stayed in 2nd gear to get speed down without pushing brake and this numpty in front of me turns without indicating, just as well he turned quickly as when I hit the brakes the car just kept going

People complain about the goverment not doing enough in this weather but people should take a hard look at there own driving skills and common scence and maybe invest in that instead.

Ahhh rant over and feeling better.

I am so fed up, ok a couple of days ago the roads here were shocking and some lanes are still terrible and I do drive slowly, but on clear roads I hate being stuck behind slow drivers and they shouldnt be allowed on the roads!!! Especially when they are the reason there are so many accidents
 
im 21, and i dont drive fast at all. i drive to the requirements of the road/conditions and my ability. i have a small nippy car with good tyres and good brakes and i know my limits.

ive also nearly been taken out in the fog by someone who decided that even though the fog was at the edge of my bonnet, that i was driving too fast and proceeded to overtake and almost go head on into the hedge because the nob couldnt see it was a bend.

if it was icy then yes, drive carefully, because most other sane people will be, but dont drive slowly on a fast road that is completely clear of ice/snow/fog on which other driver will be driving at 50+.

I couldn't agree more. I am 26 so no old granny either. Never mind the snow, WTF are you going to do when you hit black ice at 60? Kill someone is the answer to that. The M11 advised speed limit was 40mph this morning. It is a motorway. Tailgating some one down a windy road because your frustrated is hardly going to help, even if they did pull out on you!

O and your good tyres don't work in this cold unless you have snow tyres on so don't kid yourself!

hang on, who said i did any tailgating... because i certainly didnt. i had to come to a complete stop on a 60 road, after just leaving a bend, putting my car in the firing line of anyone who was coming round that corner, and then i stayed well back from her, because she was clearly an idiot driver, the fact that she went round the two roundabouts into town in the wrong positon and idicated right andf pulled left at the traffic lights kinda showed that. i had my son in the car, i would never intentionally put him at risk.

>my tyres so far have beaten all the guns brand new off roaders as im the only person who can get into my drive so i think they are good enough. (and the fact that they wont let me do handbrake turns in the snow when th trucks have done 360's down the hill...no fun!!!

some too fast some too slow some with foglights on.... yes thats why I put my full beam on instantly its a automatic reaction to them now, front blinding.... rear carnt see brake lights I would like to find the cretin that invented them, they are so dangerous paticulaly in rain on the motorway .. oh and yes there seem to be an increasing number of people who either come flying up to a give way expecting to come out and or they pull out onto a 60mph road as if the trafic is only going at 30... stay relaxed and safe out there..

It is just a fact of life that tyre compounds do not work at low temps. Nothing against your tyres. Stopping distances increase as the temp drops.

And I'm sorry I said you were tailgating. I misinterpreted. Doh!

I just think when it's like this, better too slow than too fast. I couldn't believe people doing 80 this morning. It was freezing fog and -11. Idiots! No way is that ok in this weather. Even on what is an apparently clear motorway.

I'm with you SNLH, a pair of new good tyres in this weather can make a major difference to say a couple year old set with a bit of tread wear.

Don't get me wrong I am all for driving as per the road conditions, I certainly hate those that still drive dangerously fast or too close, brake to late and too hard ect its those who seem to have no ability to read the road conditions thats gets me, be it either driving way to slowly that they are themselves a hazard or those still braking hard and late when really you should be braking very lightly over a longer period of time ect. If you don't have the ability or confidence to read the road conditions then please stay off them.

It was -7 this morning at 10am - there is absolutely no way I am going to put my foot down in these conditions. I had a complete moron right up my back side this afternoon driving through a busy town centre with 3 inches of slush on the road. He was also swerving out towards the right as if to overtake me with cars coming the other way!
 
We had the opposite here today. We were going along at 20mph = there is still a lot of snow on the roads and there is a fair bit of ice around, but people insisted on overtaking us and then speeding off. It may seem slow to some people but when the roads aren't clear, it isn't safe to drive in a normal way.
 
The roads around here are still very slippy as the coucil didnt send any gritters out until very late, so lots of black ice.

TBH I think the idiot drivers are those that are haring around bleating about how everyone is going too slow! In these conditions, no such thing as too slow. I was driving in it on saturday at about 15mph and lightly tapped my brakes and skidded...I too have good tyres, good brakes and know my car and my own driving ability (I'm 26 and have been driving since I was 18)

I appreciate that you may not have had as much snow as the rest of us OP, but if you are driving at 60mph, with your kiddy in your car, and you hit a patch of black ice (which isnt just the result of snow, a frosty night can cause it too), theres not much you are going to be able to do about it.
 
I am with the OP on this one. I live in Moray close to the A96 and have been doing a 35 mile commute to work over the weekends. The A96 between my house and Inverness has been kept clear despite there now being a good 8 inches of snow outside my house. The road is a 60mph and is in the right condition to do 60mph. It does not need people to drive along at 20mph, these people cause more accidents than those going too fast and cause people to get stuck going up any hills that are around us.

I don't go tearing around the place and did get stuck in the snow on the way to the yard but if you do drive too slowly you are more likely to get stuck.

Incidently I was driving back on Friday night when it was -10 at 4.30am in the morning when there had been some fresh snow. As the road was empty I did test the brakes on the road and yes there was some skid but you could safely drive at 40mph in it.

If you are not confident then do not drive in this weather. Simple

Just for the record I drive at the speed at which I can safely react, and would not run anyone off the road. I have no problem with reversing and when going along one track road to the yard always seem to be the one tucking into the hedge or reversing quarter of a mile because person in 4x4 can't go back 50 yards to the passing place.
 
Well most of the time these days I drive a small tipper truck - slowly, even in dry good weather. I've actually had one guy recently blarring his horn behind me so much I stopped and went back to ask him what the matter was - he said that I was driving too slow and he was late for work! Get up earlier, I said. For the record, I was in a single track lane with ditches both sides through a nature reserve! I reckon that 30mph is quite fast enough particularly when I often find folks approaching at 50mph obviously expecting the road to suddenly expand so they can get passed.

I am heartily fed up with folk pulling out of side roads in clouds of dust or worse still - slamming their anchors on half way out and glaring! One of the worst offenders in a nearby village just had the front of their car cut off by someone who obviously drives faster than me. Did I laugh?

I imagine a horse to be laying in the road around every bend - that thought controls my accelerator.
 
I'm sick of having stupid little chavs racing up my ar*se when there is BLACK ice on the roads.....you know the stuff you CANNOT SEE and you only know it's there when you hit it!

I drive at a sensible speed as I have had enough near misses so far this year, if some jumped up little tw*t want's to go roaring ahead then fine..... stick your toe down and overtake!

What gets me is all these crazy foreign lorry drivers who think its acceptable to race past cars doing 5-10 miles an hour at 60 miles an hour in blizzard conditions!!! It really quite scary when they then start sliding around all over the place but carry on like a lunatic right in front of you!

Well I'm another idiot then as I completely agree with everything you've said. This country needs more idiots like us.

For the record, one of my collegues at work who is an advanced driver is now on long term sick leave. He was driving on a main road a couple of weeks ago, hit black ice, crashed through a fence, down a bank, somersaulted twice and hit a tree. He fractured a vertebrae and is lucky not to be paralysed.

If you are in doubt about the road conditions - Take Your Time.
 
I was talking to my friend who lives just outside Hereford earlier today, so she's in your area. It didn't sound as if you should be driving at 60 mph on any of the 60 mph roads?
 
people do drive like idiots, but its better to drive slowly rather than normal speed. There are still problems such a black ice.

Im in my 4x4 but i still drive with extra care - end the end of the day if i have idiots behind me i pull over and let them pass, they arent going to push me along. if they want to potentially cause an accident and kill themselves then thats their choice, dont involve me and my family!

Are you for real? It isn't safe to drive any faster than 20 mph on roads covered in snow! Have some patience and some common sense before you kill someone!
