Why don't people like plaited tails?

Because to me it looks like no effort has been made. That's just how I see it. There is no right or wrong. If I see a horse at a show well turned out , I always think to myself - nice..

And well turned out to me is plaited mane , pulled tail.

I'd rather a plaited tail over natural as a lot of effort goes into a plaited tail.

But my preferred choice is pulled/clipped

Depends what type you're showing
It is correct for mine to be left natural....

A racehorse owner we used to train for refused to let any of his horses have a plaited tail. To do a good tail plait it needs to be quite tight and he believed it made the horse uncomfortable and clamp their tails in. Its also why you don't see dressage horses with plaited tails.

Eh? We try and plait Kal's tail for dressage and he has no problem carrying it (he has a lovely tail carriage). The only time we don't plait for dressage (or hunting) is if he is too excited to stand still (we plait at the venue because he just rubs it out in the lorry/in transit and tail bandages and tail guards rub his sensitive little bottom raw).

Here's one I did for a friend at BHS camp final competition day. I was out of practice as I had natives at the time but used to love plaiting my daughters showhunter ponies in the past. Now I have a non native coloured mare I have raked hers as she had too much white tail underneath which keeps getting pooey!

I hate seeing a pulled mane or tail, I just feel it is so unnecessary to put a horse through it so that it 'looks' better to us superior humans who decide!! I know I am probably in the minority but that is just how I feel about it.

I like both, but my horse has a 'pulled' tail. I say 'pulled' but I don't pull it, I use thinning scissors and a rake ( I also don't pull her mane, I use a solo comb :O )

I have worked on a few different types of yards, Eventers all had pulled tails, Working Hunters(Summer) Hunters (Winter) had pulled tails, Dealers yard all had au natural tails as were sold as mostly alrounders (with the odd SJ or Dressage horse) Oh and Polo yard they were clipped :)

I like a plaited tail, and I think it makes my boy's backside look a lot more defined (he's a chunky gypsy cob) :biggrin3: He has a long mane and feathers so wouldn't look right with a pulled tail. He is plaited for dressage with a running plait in his mane. The only negative is that the tail plait takes me about 3 times as long as the mane plait :rolleyes3:

Gosh, I had no idea so much thought was put into tails or manes :D

I've never touched P's mane or forelock & only ever lop a bit of the bottom of his tail in the winter, to stop it dangling in mud of him standing on it in the stable.

It's a good job he's a native!

I think tail plaits are hard to do to a decent standard, I'd rather see a nicely pulled tail than a scruffy, chunky tail plait (Not that the OP's is, hers is pretty darn good!)

It's correct for a driving horse (of pony) to have a natural tail- works for me! Ridden showing I put in a tail plait and plait up for marathons, but other than that they enjoy their tail as nature made it. If I showed seriously they'd have to have pulled tails as plaiting isn't currently in 'fashion' showing but I don't :p At dressage there always seems to be a 50/50 pulled to natural look so don't stick out there either.
