why don't people slow down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So sorry, I have lost a cat this way as well, it broke my heart. I also hit and killed a little cat that strolled across the a1 in the dark as I was going 60. I've never cried so hard. I went back and walked down the verge to find it as I couldn't bare the thought of it being injured. Poor little soul was obviously killed outright. I picked him up and had to keep him to get him scanned for a chip as he had no collar. No chip either so I called all the vets and rescues with a description in case someone was searching. I buried him with some flowers. I sobbed non stop. Please don't think that drivers don't care, a cat has no chance even at 30. I'm so sorry for your loss though.

thankyou all

I still can't believe I am not going to wake up from this:(

Our road was national speed limit (ridiculous when 2 yards in it)

We have got the speed down to 40mph but drivers ignore it and still go well over.

Even last week when out hacking we checked as we got to the right hand bend (no cars coming round previous bend which has 100 yards between straight it is) we had all barely ridden round the bend 2 strides to turn into the yard when a landrover wizing up and to swerve to avoid hitting 3 horses ( ours) woman said we didn't see you we were going 25mph yeh sure we said no way . They drove over a slow sign in road past a warning horse riders triangular sign.

I took a few pictures of her before the vet took her away and had some fluff cut off just enough to make jewelry or as a keep sake.

I wish the police would do some spot checks they would get lots of speeders here.

My Kassie (not the same one as my niece who also has a cat call Kassie but she is B&W)

My little girl was so petite and slender like a Siamese I am sure she had this in her.

Gut wrenching why some people speed to get there 10 mins early and kill anything on the way

KatPT I feel for you I di once have a cat run out in front I thought I hit it but it ran off into garden.

wildlife is one thing but pets is another. RIP all those we have sadly lost :(

Its not nice when any loved creature be it human or animal etc is taken away too early but I reserve judgement on the driver until I know the facts of how this happened

If driver was doing a legal safe 30 in a 30 limit for example and the cat was in the road and to avoid would have the potential to cause another incident then I do not see how the speed issue can be used

I understand but

this road has had the speed reduced to 40 from national speed limit. ONLY 1 in 20 keep to the speed. Its used as a work road so people hare down it as its between 2 villages .

I would put money the driver was speeding as we ride up and down all the time and have near misses and actual contact with vehicles on our horses:(

What an awful thing to happen! Animals do break our hearts. Personally, since my cat was run over many years ago, I would never have another, unless I lived far away from any busy roads.

Then it seems reasonable that the driver could well be over the posted limit

I do suspect that at 40 mph any driver would find it difficult to safely avoid a cat on the road because from my years of experience it seems that anything over 30 mph makes it virtually impossible for the cat to escape

As a former full time LGV driver and advanced driver I lost count of the amount of animals including cats that I have run over during the past 30+ years but in all those cases it was not safe to even attempt to avoid them

I have never run over a legally domestic animal in that time probably because the owners of legal domestic animals have them under control

Cats by law are defined as wild animals

Cats are such difficult animals to keep safe. Many people opt to keep them safe by not allowing them out of the house, though it has to be wondered if this is any sort of fair life for a cat. I do think that far too many people choose to own them without thinking about the dangers they will be facing every day. Does anyone know whether cats are able to be contained by use of those electric boundary collars you can get for dogs?

i think those collars are now illegal in Wales and many people will thinnk them cruel. However i have one for my cat as like Leviathan i also live and keep my horses off a straight 40mph road that drivers rip down. I have picked up a couple of cats on this road so when I got my cat we decided to try a collar. i have a wire that runs around the back garden (and kindly that of my neighbour to giver her more space). My cat wears a collar with little metal pokey out bits (can't think of a better word). If she goes near the fence the collar beeps, if she doesn't then turn away and gets closer it tingles, kind of like a tiny static shock. It has worked well at keeping her off the road and allows her more freedom than a house cat. We don't have a cat flap though, so we know when she is in or out and take the collar on/off as appropriate.

Sounds like an excellent solution. Glad it is working so well. It must be a weight off your mind.
