Why Don't You Just Listen?!?!

I'm surprised the owner agreed to stick her 16.2 in a 9x9 stable. Surely that size is only suitable for a pony.

Unless you were there how do you guys know whether the vet call out was necessary or not, as far as we know it could be a stress head who colics at the drop of a hat.

As for banks being no help when the horse gets cast, what they do help with is the angle of the legs, the legs tends to be higher making it easier to get the ropes on them to pull them over, just my opinion. :)

I'd be pretty cross if the vet was called for my horses if they were cast. We used to have race horses get cast all the time. You pull them up and put them back on their feet and they're fine in half an hour.

It is weird when people don't appear to care for their horse but perhaps she just isn't the demonstrative type. I know I'm not. People probably think I'm terribly cold but I do worry about them. I just do it privately. Maybe she's just one of those?

I can totally understand why the owner is hacked off with having a vet bill for a horse who just cast itself. I would be pretty miffed about that too.

It sounds like the horse was on some sort of full/assisted livery, and even if on DIY, one would normally hope that other people would use their common sense and call a vet if they thought it was needed. If it happened in the middle of the night what's the point in delaying by calling the owner and getting them out of bed/worrying them sick and then possibly having to call a vet anyway, when the person in charge of the horse felt a vet was necessary. It could have done some nasty damage for all they/we/the owner knew, and imagine the owner's uproar if the vet hadn't been called and the horse died?

I think the fact that the vet themself said the horse had been very lucky is a good indication that the person in charge of the horse was right to call them.

I'd far rather somebody called a vet for mine if they were in any doubt, and I'd suck up the bill however skint I was, and be grateful that there were people around who had the thought to do so.

Thank you, this is what I would rather!!

Even though me and my family look after our horses so obviously no livery, grooms etc. I would much rather keep my horse where maybe the YO was a bit over the top at calling the vet out than not calling it out at all!

In answer to everyones question on how I know they needed the vet was that the horse was certainly not right and this was backed up by the vet administering drugs to the horse.

This is NOT MY YARD, NOT MY HORSE, NOT MY BUSINESS

I posted it when I was VERY upset because this poor horse is consistently left by its owner, she had it tacked up for her on arrival (extra costs, she is on full livery anyway) and has it pre-competition groomed, plaited, neatened up etc. so am sure that the person responsible for the horse that night thought that she would rather her horse have care by the vet, and that she would not worry about the bill at the end because of her already extortionate livery bills every month anyway!!!!

So all these questions you are asking - I have no idea exactly the answers and just put this post as I said at first as a 'rant' because things like this keep happening to this horse!

Oh and our three horses all have massive 12ft X 12ft stables and would never be in anything smaller, so just incase you think I was the one that put that horse in that stable,

Thanks, sorry If i sound rude but everyone just jumps on me at the moment with all my posts and I have no idea why?!

xx

I dont think you sounded rude at any point, unlike Starbuck and those who jumped on her little bandwagon of rudeness, i do wonder if they would be brave enough to be rude to your face like that or if it is only when they are sat behind a computer screen that they become bolder?

Please try to stop apologising to people when you have no need to :)

OP, I have 'listened' and tbh haven't found an honest motive to be at odds with the horses owner. Not all horse owners have infinate amounts of money and many have enough to keep their horse in a dignified manner but without chucking money away. I have 10 liveries and all are well off who can afford their livery/blacksmith and vet bill. This does not mean that I will call out a vet for a something and nothing. Had one of my liveries been cast and had fractured a limb, badly damaged something or was haemorrhaging, then yes, I would call a vet then the owner. I can see nothing in your posts which make it nec to call a vet without the owners consent. Many years ago I had my boy on grass livery, he cut himself, I went twice a day to medicate the cut which was superficial. I arrived one day to find him in a box, bandaged to his elbow (cut was on his fetlock) and me with an 80 POUND call out and medication fdee. I was livid but payed the bill anyway (like an idiot).
I can think of better things to do with my hard earned cash than be put in the position to hand it over to vet or whoever for nothing. The fact that the vet said "he was lucky" means nothing. They are the comforting noises they make when the have been called out for nothing and like you to believe that you haven't spent your money on nothing. I know, I worked for an equine vet for many a year.

I guess that while the yard owner is away she has handed the responsibilty over to someone else like your friend? I guess thats one of the problems with having horses on livery. You have to trust the YO in an emergency.
Did no one think to contact the owner of the horse before calling the vet? I may of missed that in some of your replies!

haha thank you, i must sound like an idio but i really didnt mean this thread to be a whole discussion topic  woopsss!

dont even think about telling me about money problems, I work and use ALL my wages for my ponies hay, do you not think that is hard, I work every saturday or sunday at a farm all day from 9am till around 7.30pm, and all the wages which equals around £48 goes straight towards all our three horses hay for the week?!?!?!?!?!?!? My mum and dad feel absolutely terrible about this but dad has been starting up this company for 3 years so we havent had any income for this time; seriously these three years I have not wanted to spend ANY money, if i did a bit of babysitting i smuggled it into my mums purse without her knowing! :( so REALLY not a great subject to bring up..........

Allover - I don't have any sort of band wagon, unless my horse box counts?

OP - didn't mean to upset you, you obviously care a lot for your horses and other peoples. You should try not to let yourself get so upset about how other people keep their horses, I've always kept my horses at home with my mum and dad but have recently moved to a yard, a lot of things people do I think are a bit strange and are not what I'd do - but unless it's something which is obviously a welfare issue it's not worth getting yourself angry/upset about.

Just make sure you do what you thinks right for your horses. :)

Oh I really hope so! I try so hard with my little girlie :p

My first pony charlie got percussion laminitis in summer, the vets bills came to £467. I would gladly pay that than be without him :)

Percussion laminitis?!

hahaha! I have a fantastic vision of your pony dancing round his stable with a big tambourine. :D

ETA - I do know you mean concussion, but thank you - made me giggle. a lot. :)

I know a huge horse that used to be in a smaller box, never got cast, moved into a bigger box when it became availible and became prone to getting cast. However I think this may have been due to the fact he didn't really get down in the smaller box!

This suggests with the solid banks that maybe yards shouldn't dig out banks and they would be better left and dug out more occasionally.. however you would then get lots of whingeing liveries. You'd never win!

Just laughed VERY loud at 'percussion laminitus'!

i would be really peed off if someone didnt call the vets,if they feel the horse needs help then thats would they should do.

any horse should be in a stable suitable for there size, anything else is just careless. if you cant afford to have a horse then you shouldnt have one.

if she doesnt look after her horse properly and you have reason to believe her horse isnt been looked after maybe you should report her.

xx

Like you say - its not your horse, yard or your business.

TBH I would be quite peeved if i read this thread as the owner - not very confidential yard staff if they like to gossip to all and sundry is it?

Also - people have full livery to be able to ENJOY their horse in the little time they have have.
If she wishes to ride instead of muck out then fine - i dont blame her!
Seems a little jealously is creeping into this thread.

You dont know this persons finances at all - you ASSUME she has money, which again could be totally off the mark.

I too would be annoyed the vet was called for something as simple as a cast horse tbh

In my stables I do not have banks (banks make no sense to me). I have anti-cast boards so wouldn't make much difference whether I had banks or not. I can totally understand why the owner is hacked off with having a vet bill for a horse who just cast itself. I would be pretty miffed about that too.

Why wasnt the owner contacted so she could make her own decision about whetehr she wanted the vet? It wasnt life or death was it?

I would have to rely on the judgement of the people that was there at the time as to call vet or not, I would also like to be phoned to be told whats happening ( if no answer leave message) at least I know that they tried to let me know.
This has got me thinking should I make my banking bigger or what?

we know a beautiful yard that has kept valuable top class showjumpers in stables no wider than 8 or 9 feet across and 10 deep for 50 years. they originally were pig styes and were built up beautifully but not made bigger . no one i ever knew made comment and i never even thought about it , in fact when i went back years later i couldnt get over how small they were ! by this time they were doing full liveries and had several vets boarding in those stables all perfectly happy. they never had a problem. ive seen several horses cast at our currant livery and they are large stables but it always seems to be the cleanest stables where the straw or bedding shifts as the horse tries to get a grip and clashes with the floor. the deep litter beds seem to provide a better base for getting up. with regards to the op saying that this horse on full livery appears to be left a lot by its owner , i understand what she is saying but in my opinion if the horse is in full livery then i understand that to be a person paying for someone else to take full responsibility for all care and welfare for said animal so that owner doesnt have to ! whether the owner turns up to see it or not is imaterial as all its welfare needs should be taken care of. i knew of several rich and famous people and business people who used to turn up rarely and one playboy used to bring his latest squeeze once a month and point out his beautiful horse ! of course in those circumstances you cant complain about a vets bill ! no matter how stupid ! i suppose it depends on what these people describe as * full livery * though:)

sorry there this person will have no idea im talking about her!!!!!! I dont live near her, dont even know her, so you know I think were fine in that aspect!

Oh no apparently she loves blurting about how much her OH makes and she can afford to buy the best for everything, and spend alot on herself really! So I think I know that ;)

I too would be annoyed the vet was called for something as simple as a cast horse tbh
would you not rather the vet be called out than something happen to your horse?!?!?!?!?!?!

Why wasnt the owner contacted so she could make her own decision about whetehr she wanted the vet? It wasnt life or death was it?
She WAS contacted, but did not answer, when they kept trying to contact her, she would not pick up and when she got to the yard the next evening to ride she was then told about her horse, they tried all methods of communication with her but aparently she has been staying with a friend - dont ask me why?! :D

I would have to rely on the judgement of the people that was there at the time as to call vet or not, I would also like to be phoned to be told whats happening ( if no answer leave message) at least I know that they tried to let me know.

Read the above reply :) Well apparently the banks have to be at least 4 ft to help but the horse should be in at least 12ft x 12ft stable, so less likely for it to become cast :)

i suppose it depends on what these people describe as * full livery * though:)

Of course the horse is looked after thoroughly on the yard, groomed, rugs changed, exercised quite a few days when asked by the owner (which is alot) and of course being on full livery the horse is always looked after even if she is not there, especially because she is on full livery the grooms looking after the horse had the responsibility to weigh up whether a vet was needed or not, this was the decision they made, on behalf of the owner :)

My god this thread is dragging on and getting nowhere. And it is all based on assumptions. OP admits she wasn't there and says she doesn't know the owner.. so how can she comment?

Round and round we go on the merrygoround of HHO.
