My 7mth old Lurcher has been brilliant when it come to toilet training, we had a couple of accidents downstairs in his first couple of weeks but has gone outside ever since even if he was upstairs when he wanted the loo.
Tonight he followed me upstairs, mooched about, I went into the room and he was doing the biggest wee on the carpet at the side of the bed. I told him off and put him straight outside. Why do you reckon he's done this and any tips for cleaning my smelly drenched cream coloured carpet?

Ive never thought twice about him weeing upstairs but feel I cant trust him now. We did say when we got him he wasnt allowed upstairs but we caved in ages again mainly for an easier life

as I couldnt get on the computer and leave him downstairs as hes into everything.

on a program i watched ages ago a dog was peeing in the bedroom. apparently because its the main place which smells of you, so hes putting his scent there.

Eeeek I hope thats not the case, we are gonna have one unhappy pup as he will have to stay downstairs if he does it again.

bicarbinate of soda is meant to be good or pop to your local pet shop and get some strong stuff that is same that takes everything out. i would say either he was desperate or he thought his scent needed to be there too.

I'd go with a commercial preparation, honestly, that gets rid of scent too. Obviously that's not going to help you tonight but it's useful to have on hand.

As to method . . .

Place paper towels or some other very absorbent material (those special absorbent shop towel work well) thickly over the area, cover with something waterproof (I used a puppy pad - worked perfectly) and put heavy books or similar on top. Change the towelling until it's not soaking anything up anymore.

Wash the area with whatever solution you're using (you might want to test a bit of the carpet for colourfastness. . . I usually skip this bit but have been known to regret it), using as little extra water as possible and blotting it up as you go. Then rinse and do the trick with the towels and books again. Keep changing them until they don't get damp after a half hour or so, then inspect and hopefully all will be well. If not then try the process again. The only problem I've found is sometimes I end up with a spot that's noticeably cleaner than the rest of the carpet . . .

I wouldn't just wash and air dry because I don't think you can rinse a carpet thoroughly enough - you need something to pull the moisture out of the carpet along with the soap and the original, um, material.

You can also get absorbent powder, like the stuff for stall floors, that soaks up moisture but be careful not to leave it because it sets into cement! Not sure about it on carpet either, as it might be tricky to get out of the pile.

Thats for all the great advice, Ive got some puppy pads left over but last night did my best to 'neutralise' it, in a fashion and stuck some cardboard over it just incase I needed the loo in the night and stood in it!
