I went to bring my boy in tonight, normally quite placid, keen to get in and power walks back to his stable. But never dangerous.
Tonight, went to bring him in, fine. walked to the gate, fine then as i opened the gate he stag jumped over the muddy gateway, nearly knocking me over, spun round and reared at me, then proceeded to flip his lid!!! Couldnt get sodding gate shut. Luckily the other horse carried on eating none the wiser

Decided to take him the other way back to stables. Not as muddy.
He was acting like a loony 3 year old TB stallion (he is 20+ connemara) No longer 14.2 - he'd grown to 17.3 at least, crossing in front of me pushing me into the fencing and threatening to tank off, buck, rear Im not sure.
ANyway, when the horses in the bottom field came up to look at him he flipped his lid completely. I just had to let him go. He turned on me half reared and galloped off the way we had come. Stopped, then turned and was galloping flat out at me with not a lot of room to pass me, Fortunately Yard Manager managed to catch him and other livery came to see I was ok.
Bugger, wasnt even blowing, he was llike a loony, so out of character.
NOthing seemed to be the reason for the behaviour, snatched at his tea, but not interested in his hay net, so not starving!
Was it the mud? Was it he was already wound up and i brought him in the wrong way?? Or is there something wrong with him...
Im a bit worried!!!!!.............................................

Nice glass of wine for getting this far.....

if this was that out of character, id say it might have just been a "fresh" day. You dont know, he may have just had a scare in the field or somethig that had lead to him being a bit psyced out!

Tomorrow take someone with you, do you have a control headcollar? like a dually or something with a bit more oomph behind it when you ask for respect? if so Id put that on him to bring him in.

Not a fun way to end the day hey?! hope ur ok

was so strange as when i went to him in the field to put headcollar on he was fine, and calm, walked up to the gate without any problem, then PSYCHO!!

Thanks Lucy, yes Im fine thankyou. Just bit shaken as there was a 90 degree bend at the end of the paddocks, with just sheep netting. Was terrified he'd kill himself!

I'd say somethings put the wind up him

Yep, agree, as simple as that. My mare is usually nice and calm, xmas day bringing her in, she was almost exactly same as you describe, only difference I did manage to hold on, just...

Must be something special to connies! My normally well behaved connie X mare became a nightmare last week, rearing, pulling and trying to swing her bum round to boot me. Finally caught me on Friday, since then I have used help in the form of large teenage son, be nice halter and a chiffney (not all at the same time!) and although still on her toes, she has decided to be a little bit more polite this week. Looking forward to better weather as I think lack of work is definitely a major reason in her case.
