Why have I lost all confidence in riding since having my last baby?!

I sit on my horse and think "OMG theres actually nothing holding me on up here" and "wow Im really high up, if I fall I'll break my neck or die"

What has happened and how do I get back to being a confident rider.........the fastest ive gone since is a trot for gods sake!! grrrrr

Im perfect for groundwork though

I was like that - a complete bag of nerves. I kept forgetting that although I hadn't ridden for a good few months, Beastie had been having lots of exercise!

Having children gives you a whole new view of things. You'll be fine in a month or so.

its just your natural survival instinct. dont beat yourself up over it....enlist a really good insructor. someone that specialized in confidence issues. it will all come back...keep going...you can do it....x

My mum said this happened to her, she actually sold her horses after having me as she was worried about getting seriosly hurt as she didnt just have herself to think about. she did start riding again though and bought another horse.

I think you become very aware of your mortality and the responsibility you now have. It is no longer just about you. You just worry what would happen if you broke anything or worse.
I found that I even drove differently and wouldn't go out on hubbys bike anymore, not as brave a rider etc. I think it just goes with the territory. I reckon you calm down a bit after a while but my boy is 11 now and I am still not as brave as i was before he came along.

I havent had a child or anything, but was always lacking in confidence due to some bad accidents at RS's early in my riding career. I have found building up to riding a very forward going (but safe) schoolmaster has helped me tons - i was frightened of the horse nicking off mostly. I thought i would never canter confidently, but now i am doing allsorts like extended trot, walk and halts to canter! I think a well schooled, safe, dependable horse would be on my list (if i didnt already have one!).

You can do it!!!!!

I find that doing some fitness classes helps with my confidence in general - i feel i am better balanced etc. (my secret has been boxing!). Your body may need some readjusting after having the baby!

After my first child, I too lost my nerve, managed to get it back a bit, then had baby no.2.
Now, although I am cautious, I have come round to thinking that if i don't do this now, I never will. I am not getting any younger!!! Somehow I more determinded than ever.
I find it a real release to get down the stables and just go out over the forest on my own.
I have taken to wearing a body protector, and I do not ride 'stupid' horses, but I am really enjoying learning how to jump again, and have been out to a couple of dressage competitions.
So, as others have said YOU CAN DO IT!!!
