very interesting Thefarrier...i think a lot of people are quick to blame their farriers when, like you say, its not in their best interests to shoe badly....i have a TB who loses shoes for fun, i've never met a horse like it- i reckon at some point he's done every single thing on your list! i find keratex hoof hardener is quite good for stopping his feet getting completely shredded every time he rips a shoe off...is there anything else i can try? i had him on biotin and then farriers formula but neither seemed to do anything (i persevered for 18 months with each!)

I enjoyed your article - informative but not too technical. My farrier says that mud is the farrier's greatest enemy - would you agree?
PS it was nice to see your face after only seeing the back of your head on your H&H piccy!

Great post, we had 3 pull shore off this year in the mud.

Sorry to be controversial though, my TBs feet were rubbish until I left him shoeless, whoops did that just come out my mouth.

You farriers do a great job

Yes mud is probably the worst. We loooove winter as you can imagine

Gails the number of times i have suggested that a horse needs a barefoot break from shoeing to grow some decent foot and its been turned down!

Prettybay, dry feet!? get something on them during the summer months. effol is good, kevin bacon is good, Hoof Heal is the best

thank you the farrier . my mare lost her shoe yeasterday being a tbx she has not got best of feet and been out of work for a year last owner not me . she has dry feet and after she lost her shoe nice bit of hoof gone. not sure if she can have her shoe back on as dont sure where nails will go . hope my farrier will know what to do tues. i have just got pro feet hardener. will now get some hoof heal. and put some over reach boots on her. thank you.

You are welcome! there is a new product on the market called hoof cast and i have now used it with success on a few Tb's it is great for strengthening the foot and also for building up the wall if there is not enough wall to nail a shoe on to. If you would like more information let me know.

Mine always wear over reach boots. Eliminates the problem in muddy conditions, but I keep them on year round.

I always thought mud itself couldn't suck the shoe off? I have always believed the mud "holds" the front hoof for a tad longer than normal during the stride, enough time to cause the back hoof to come and tread on the front shoe before it's lifted out of the mud.

Surely if mud itself could suck the shoe off then overreach boots wouldn't make a blind bit of difference in muddy conditions, which is clearly not the case as mine have never lost a front shoe over winter so long as I've remembered the over reach boots.

We must be lucky then with our mud.

ETA: I'm currently tubbing Oliver's feet in water for five minutes, twice a day, to help combat dry hooves. Never had this problem with his feet before.

Your best bet is after tubbing his feet to apply something moisturising like kevin bacon, effol or hoof heal. This will help lock in the moisture. Dont do it if the ground is already wet as then the feet will just become soft

Changing weather is the worst thing for keeping shoes on. Horses that live in a consistant climate tend to have much better hooves on average than here in the UK with our ever changing weather

Excellent article. You did of course forget the 'because they have innate psychic abilities and are aware you have spent a small fortune on entering and preparing for an event, so in the spirit of 'humour' find a novel and innovative way to pull off a shoe either at 10pm the night before or in the lorry on the way, despite never having shown any tendancies to pull a shoe before, ever. This means you either have to withdraw or deal with the shoddy on-site farrier and spend the day looking at the foot every 3 seconds to see if the shoe has lasted as the farrier appeared to throw it in the direction of the hoof then throw some nails after it....'

Absoutely. I do only do it when the weather is dry, naturally.

I've been smothering Aqueous cream into the hooves afterwards to "lock in" moisture.

Exactly! how could i forget that?

Did said farrier use a nail gun?

I would be amazed if mine managed to hold shoes for 4 months!
Certainly wouldn't be blaming the farrier if one came off after that time, my youngster pulls his off himself when he wants new ones...

ah...thats interesting to have different things depending on weather
smile.gif
will try that one. i have the world's biggest supply of broken and odd overreach boots!
grin.gif

It only works if the different weather is more extended so if its been sunny and it rains for one day there isnt much point. But you want to help harden the feet during periods of excess raina nd mud and you wan tto moisturise them when its dry to help keep nice healthy supple feet
