I am such a nightmare when it comes to looking for a new horse.Every month i get a copy of horse deals sit there and sift through it looking for a potential new horsey. Ive had loads to shell out for this month with mot and god knows what and what with christmas just around the corner its been an expensive month. I cant believe the one month i have all this to shell out for i have seen about eight or nine gorgeous horses in horse deals that i could have potentially purchased is it me or has anyone else found this happens to them too?

Buying it is the cheap bit !
Why don't you work out how much keeping a horse will cost and put this money into a savings account every month, you can't cheat and miss a month because once you have your horse you can't "put it on hold" just because you are short of money that month ! Then after say a year you will have the money to buy your horse, and you will also know you can afford to pay for keeping it !

I think im the only person in the world that thinks buying it is the expensive bit! I only pay about £100-£150 a month per horse in total.............

Fine - but what happens if the horse is injured, needs the vet, needs vaccinations, needs shoeing, needs to travel somewhere, needs new tack, needs new rugs, needs special supplements, needs registrations fees in order to compete, needs insurance. You can't tell me that you can get all that into £100 per month!

Ahhhh but the horse doesnt 'need' to have new tack or competition fees or to travel anywhere etc..... thats what the owner 'needs'

I think apart from emergency vet fees then most other things can be budgeted for and worked out over a year.... even the farrier and vacs when you devide them up into a weekly amount are affordable.

Insurance doesnt have to be expensive if you keep the value of the horse down... you will still get paid for vets fees just not a large amount on death.

It can be done on a budget and I am sure that lots of people do just that.

A budget, yes. But no way can a horse be kept for £1200 a year. Even if you are on your own land you need to allow for repairs, field maintenance etc. If you are a livery, then you obviously have to pay to be there, and also for travelling to and from the yard (which is a necessity). If you have someone else to pay for maintenance of wherever the horse is kept, then obviously it is cheaper. But shoes at around £60 every 6 weeks, vaccinations £100, insurance £100, 30 bales of hay throughout the year £100, rugs and other clothing for the horse £100, worming £80 - that already adds up to £1000, which leaves £200 for livery or field maintenance which doesn't seem a lot to me.

Of course a horse may not be shod, but there is still farrier work to be done, he may not need a rug, but then will need extra hard feed over the winter - I just don't think it is possible on £1200 a year unless soeone else is paying for a lot of the cost as part of their every day costs i.e. field maintenance etc. Or unless you are working with horses and therefore have significantly reduced costs (but also a lower salary).
