Why is it so hard for people to look after your horse??

Ok, I have calmed down a lot since last night but I wondered if I am being unreasonable................ Have my boy on full livery as there are no yards near me (that I know of) that have DIY and services if I need them, for when I'm working away etc. My yard is only full livery and although the people are nice it just seems that there is no common sense. The hay they use is terrible and many a time have I asked for it to be socaked and put in a haynet as my boy eats it too quickly if placed on the floor. They never soak it and it is always on the floor! I then decided that I would put him on haylage as his condition was poor when I bought him and I wanted him to have as much as he wanted rather than being rashioned. Now it seems that if he has the haylage they don't bother to put in any hay or he just has the cr@p on the floor mixed in with the straw from previous night and he is then stood in without anything until they get fed at 5. Then they don't bother to feed the damn haylage!!! - I have now complained about this so many times I have even made up the haynets - I pay and supply them with the haylage so there is no cost to them. I get down last night after not being able to go on Tuesday and his Tuesday net is still sitting where I left it. Also the lights aren't great down there and I am down there on my own at night and they say that as no-one really uses the lights they wont pay for better ones - the reason people don't ride in the evening is because the lights are so bad!!!! Sorry but am I being unreasonable?? RANT over!! Cookies and cakes if you got this far!! xx
 
You are definatly not being unreasonable! I would be fuming if the people I am paying to look after my horses weren't doing it correctly. Have you spoken to the YO/YM about this?
 
Maybe if you post your general location people could suggest alternative yards?

not being unreasonable at all pickle is on full livery monday-friday he is always fed and my instructions are followed yes there will always be an occasional mistake, but the mistakes you have been facing are too regular.
 
To be honest the price that I pay is more or less what all the others charge but other yards have better facilities. I have spoken to the YM so many times, left notes etc. but it never seems to work! I don't mind popping his haylage in when I've ridden if he has hay in there already but he is coughing on the hay. I am spending about £18 on haylage on top of my livery and I just cannot trust them. I will do another post about yards but I am in the Cambridge, Royston, Saffron Walden area so there are no yards close that have space. There is the possibility of a place on a completely DIY yard but there is no help and i need to know that he is taken care of if I can't get there. Any ideas? Oh and thanks for making me feel that I'm not being unreasonable!!
 
definately not being unreasonable and the problems you are having are one of the reasons I left my first yard - drove me insane. I know itmust be hard but I would be searching high and low for a new yard and getting my name on waiting lists - you never know.
 
Just a suggestion - I keep my horses at a DIY livery yard, and have been there forever. When my circumstances changed I asked the yard manager if she could help out at all - she now turns out and mucks out a couple of mornings a week, and if I am stuck for getting in (maybe, once a fortnight) she gets in for me. I pay my livery, and then her £X extra per week per horse and we are all happy. It may be worth going to look at a DIY yard and if anyone lives on site perhaps they could help out a bit. Not sure how much help you need and whether this could work, but it does for us..........good luck!
 
I know what you are saying about DIY, there is one about 10 mins from my house however it is owned by a farmer and he has no-one on the ayrd - it is a free for all. Problem is firstly thje only people you can rely on is the other liveries, providing they want to help and secondly he is always full. I have my name on some waiting lists but really in my area there are no yards - if i won the lottery I would be making a mint out of liveries. My friend and I have been looking for a yard for the last year or so, so we can have our horses at the same yard but there is nothing and I am really getting down as it means that if I want to make sure my horse is fed properly I am going to have to go down every night - even if it is at midnight!!

Don't know if you are prepared to come down to North Herts but I know a lovely small yard in the Benington area where the girl that runs it is very knowledgible and your horse would be well looked. There is some amazing off road hacking as well.
