on either permanent loan or free to good home....I can provide fab home..only want to hack occasionally (2-3 times a week max) only as Ted is out of work/may have to retire altogether...but am in the process of renting my own piece of land with a couple of stables on..rather than keep ted on livery...so ted will need A companion too...horse needs to be over 15.3hh and be fairly sensible and good in traffic to hack alone...not bothered about looks/age/old injuries etc, just needs to be able to hack out...if anybody has any suggestions or has anything suitable pm me ...thanks:)
 
Because people don't want to pay enough for them and demand outstrips supply!! Have bought something similar - didn't have to jump / show/ work in an outline etc - recently and had up to £5000 to spend and still found it took a lot of looking to find a 'proper' hack that went first / last, alone / company doesn't need riding every day to keep sane - granted we did want it sound!
 
It takes a lot of work and time to get a horse safe in traffic so people tend to keep them once they have got them sorted out. If they come up for sale a safe laid back horse is worth a fortune (even an old horse).
 
I do know of them, but the ones I know available have a few undesirable health problems. One lovely young cob had a sarcoid removed last year, and has a scar from that, and also a spavin. He actually needs to stay in regular low impact work. So a road walk every other day would be ideal, but his owner is not sure anyone would want him or look after him well enough. He would be worth his weight in gold if it wasn't for that.
 
I have one, well I wouldn't go as far to say he's good in traffic, or even that well behaved on the road in general, depends what mood he's in lol!! :D
 
I'm currently looking for something similar for my Mum. I've been looking for almost two years and have a decent budget. Height range 14.2-16.2, age range 5-15, not even bothered if the horse has an old injury and is only capable of light work, needs schooling on, has minor health issues etc. Only requirement is that it's MW/HW.

I can't find a thing, so good luck to you - you might need it!

because they are worth their weight in gold and they are the type of horse that alot of people want! I was after the same just over a year ago and was prepared to spend up to £5k, I couldn't find one!! In the end I had to go with a safe on the road, but as green as the greenest grass mare! She is fab, but has taken alot of work as she was beyond a beginner bless her - but is as safe as a living thing can be on the road and is sane if off work for a while and then ridden out.
A charity might be your best option as I would imagine you would have to be v lucky to find one on loan or free.
 
Crikey I wish you were all over here (or I was over there) - I have a lovely 11yo ISH who would love to be a happy hacker - fab alone or in company, great in traffic and out and about, really sweet to do, and I can't find him a home because everyone wants something to take sj'ing and he simply can't cope with the atmosphere at shows (think along the lines of wetting your knickers rather than going loopy :().

They do exist :)
 
Ehm, you might have to compromise, and/or find something that's possible, if green, as long as its got the right temperament.

Two years ago I was all for selling mine as he was hopeless hacking out on his own; absolutely daft with traffic and had some nasty little habits like napping and spinning.

I sent him to equestrian college on working livery, and he came back an absolute dream! A lovely, well schooled horse - but only with others, sooooo ..... we had to work on getting his confidence at solo hacking.

I had a lovely ex-schoolfriend to help, and she worked on my confidence as well as his, and now we're out hacking, OK with traffic (we still aren't keen on cyclists tho' or joggers running at him); but it took a lot of work, time and effort, BUT as my friend says, he had the right temperament underneath it all, and just needed time and schooling to bring out his nice side.

My boy was an ex-trekker, which was why he'd never hacked solo, so this might be a starting point? Lots of trekking places look for winter loan homes for their horses: just a thought ..... you could have something on loan and if you like it make them an offer.
 
i think they are hard to find on loan because they are so useful - even as a downtime horse or just to keep to use when friends fancy a ride - & they have huge re-sale value even when quite old - i have a lovely 20 yr old version at home & do occasionally think about putting her out on loan - but she is my security blanket horse & any loan home would have to be fantastic & would have to put up with me stalking them;)
 
have found one...a 17hh warmblood well bred concorde lines, black, 7yr old, had very mild case of wobblers though!! x

ETA he is free! x
 
This doesn't bode well. I'm just starting to look for a MW/HW happy hacker. It seems I might be looking for some time!!!
