Why is it so hard to find a livery yard.....

Its chaos due to yards not being regulated properly. The BHS scheme is a joke, they are not properly qualified to do sufficient health and safety checks and half the time its tea and sandwiches on the lawn with the livery yard owners. I know this for an absolute fact and I find it appalling.

Too many people (unqualified or experienced) get yards without knowing what they are doing, equally too many people get horses without even knowing the basics.

If we took a good look at Germany and other European countries which have better regulation and higher standards we might just get somewhere.

£10!!!! Just out of curiosity, what do you get facilities wise for £10 a week, and is the upkeep of the yard (fencing, stables, harrowing/rolling/spraying of fields etc) satisfactory?

I don't understand how people can charge so little and properly run a livery yard, starting to wonder if I should cut down on the upkeep of my yard and slash my prices, that way I might actually make a living!!

Um I used to pay £6 for stable and £5 for field at my old yard (now have own place) This included stable, water, electric, personal huge metal feed bin for each horse, upkeep of yard (fencing, field maintenance) YO used to check horses during night for everyone, She also paid for CCTV - 3 cameras, recently put in security lgihting all around yard, rug drying room, own barn for storage of hay/straw. summer schooling paddock .

The land is owned by an elderly lady who no longer keeps her own horses. There's 14 acres with post and rail, hedges and trees and two open barns for shelter.Automatic water in fields, a small, shabby but safe yard with stables, feed room, tack room, water and electricity. Large hay bales are put in the fields each week and the cost is split between owners. There's a small barn for storage of personal hay/bedding. We use a grass paddock with jumps in summer and hacking is excellent. Muck is put on trailer and removed when full. Harrowing/rolling /topping is done as required by YO's farmer brother.
YO checks fields and horses once or twice a day. However, my OH and I often do things, like mucking out the big barn, topping nettles, fixing latches, clearing drains etc, not because we have to, but because it helps and makes the yard better for the horses.
This yard, though basic is perfect for my horses because they are living out in a herd.
Former yard was luxury- 3 schools, wash room, you name it, we had it -but turnout was individual paddocks- no respite from the sun in summer and during snow and rain, they were kept in for days/weeks. It was £25 a week, fab YO, very smart and great for owners. Not so great for horses with such limited TO and small paddock-ettes.

If you ignore the fact that advertising is against forum's T&Cs, it would be useful if you have given a clue about your location :D
