Why is it that when it is a lovely day someone has to ruin it for you?

I took my boy for his first hack yesterday since I bought him in November, I went out with a lovely lady from the yard and her sensible horse, we passed cars, cyclists, people running, baby in push chair, loads of horses in fields and 4 different sets of ridden horses and everything was going great. My boy didn't bat an eye lid at anything and I was feeling on top of the world. Then just coming up the road where there is a riding school (this has been there for years!!) this old bag in her car came hurtling towards us, we were on a narrow stretch of road so we kept in as much as possible and she then turned the car head on towards us and put her foot down. Quick thinking of my friends horse and her she managed to yank him up the bank and we were right behind her and this woman missed us by cms if that. My friends horse was in a fluster but she managed to get him back and my horse just stood there - bless him. Although very shaken up we were lucky that both us and the horses weren't hit. But what is wrong with these people? We both were head to toe in high viz, as were our horses and it made no difference. next time I will be riding out with some stones or something hard in my pocket to throw at the offender as I really am so angry. As per ususal the police won't do anything as we weren't actually hit. Only good thing to come out of it, is that I completely trust my horse now, he is 100& in all ways!! Sorry rant over and cookies if you got this far!! x

I don't understand why the police wont act as that is classed as driving without due care and attention!! I would right to the Chief Constable if I were you, too much of this goes on!!!!

I would also write to the local newspaper - you might even get them to do a feature on horses on the road if you are in a horsey area. Ok, it is frustrating you can't do anything about this particular person but I am sure they know who they are & this way you may just prick their conscience!

I know what you mean lochpearl!

What a fantastic weekend for hacking out - unfortunately every one else was out too

and some complete idiots driving - we were hacking along a short stretch of a busy road (a neccessity to get to bridle ways) and we were going around a blind bend - we held traffic behind when we saw cars coming and waved them to pass when there was non (as we could see) - I don't tend to like waving cars pass in case another car comes the other way and then you are to blame....

one woman we clearly told to stop who carried on to over take us - ended up having to slam on because a car came the other way - forcing those cars to also slam on.... and she then cut up the 3 of us....

The police should do something.

I had a similar incident and we reported it to the police, they were out within an hour and went to see the driver as we had got the cars registration.

Did you get the drivers registration?

I hate ignorant drivers. Although the one you describe is more than ignorant, they are bloody mad! Do they not realise what would have happened if they'd hit you?!
At my old yard, a driver skimmed one of the school horses' legs when they were out on a hack..the horse was out of work for 2 weeks due to bruising and the driver didn't stop even to apologise! The owner of the yard recognised the car a few weeks later and went up to have a go..and the cheeky git denied everything! These people want the same doing to them, to see how they like it!

Firstly we didn't realy get chance to get the number plate as we were both so shocked and she was driving so fast. However I am not one to take things lying down and I think someone on the yard knows where she lives so I think that I will be popping over to see her - obviously I will not do anything illegal but I think that this woman needs to be told. I can then get the reg of her car and I will then see if the police will act. Problem is, as I said there is a riding school on that road and there are so many hacks that go out from there, many of them children, now I have been riding for 27 years so I am more likely to have more chance of getting out of a situation like that however someone less experienced it could have been a lot worse.

dont even get me started on this topic! no matter how good the horse is i now ride in the middle of the road (of course wearing high viz) so the car has to come to almost a complete stop and then i will move out of the way. yip i have had arms being waved at me, swearing from the driver, and not in this country but a shotgun pulled out on me!
i would rather annoy a few drivers and know my horse is safe.

It never ceases to amaze me how dangerous some people can be in their cars...the other day two friends of mine were out riding and a van with a trailer on the back speeded up coming towards them...they had nowhere to go but cling to the wall at the side of the road...with trailer bouncing and making hell of a noise...luckily it just skimmed them and no-one got hurt.
A few years back a friend was waiting at a junction to go left, and a car just went straight up the back of the horse and took its legs right out from underneath it...then drove off as my friend was on the road with the horse...luckily both did survive but the horse had to have treatment and time off.

It makes me soooo mad...

Well, i was fuming yesterday when a car i saw flying towards me (on a raod by the way that's be closed for a several weeks so been lovely and quiet). i'd seen this t*sser in his Audi TT aleady overtake a car and then was coming towards us, now granted i think he may have slowed down form, say 70 to around 60/50mph but i signalled him to slow down ads he was coming towards us, anyway the w*nker just shook his head at my request!!!

Only later i though why on why hadn't I thrown my heavy (but rubber) whip onto his stupid car?! That'd have given him a shock. Was more annoyed about the woman (who he was evidently showing off to) in the passenger seat - had i been her I'd have demanded he stopped and I'd have got out of the car. What sort of woman dates a complete moron like that?!

If you can find out who she is and get her reg plate from someone at riding school, the police will def go and have a word with her. She might not get charged but it may be enough to shock her and stop her doing it again.
Silly cow

I agree with you wildpony, however this is exactly waht my friend did as she was used to people the slowing down - She has a very large 17hh (shire type) which usually puts people off!!! But as I said she just aimed at us and put her foot down. i think that I will be making it my mission to find this woman and reporting her. Problem is I wont be out in the light until the weekend, however I'm sure it wont matter just as long as she doesn't kill someone in the meantime!! It's also nice to have such support from you all. The amount of horses around my area is tremendous and I do understand that people do need to get to where they are going and if they are having to drive slowly every few yards, but they must realise that horses are unpredictable and many people do not have bomb proof horses on the road so the likelihood that their car will be written off and they be the cause of a horse and riders death should be firmly in their mind. Plus not being funny but if my horse damages someone's car I will not give them my insurance for my insurance to pay for the damage as it would be their fault!

Sounds like an old bat who passed me last week. She wasn't slowing down so I kept my cob in the middle of the road, when she slowed down I moved over, but she then just put her foot down and sped past ! I do turn my long schooling whip round and run it along the side of any car that gets too close, it does no damage (unfortunately !) but must make a nice scary oh-my-god-I've-hit-something noise !

Unfortunately most of these selfish drivers are only thinking of themselves in their safe little tin boxes. Perhaps if some of them realised the damage half a ton of horse (+rider) could do to their precious car and themselves, they might slow down a bit. Most of them are under the impression that we're all "posh" so it's fun to give us a scare.

See I don't mean to pick on your post but riding like that isn't helping anyone is it? will just make people think ignorants ride horses!

true parkranger but with sooo many ignorant drivers we dont have a choice anymore. we hear of to many horrible stories why should we even risk it by being polite and moving over hiding on the side of the road so the cars can speed past us and gain that extra 10 seconds? and i always wave and smile
