I have been on current livery yard since last November, have owned mare who has just turned 4 since the September.

Winter was ok. Lovely big, bright airy stables and 2 sand paddocks to lunge and turnout in and large 60x30 school. It suited me fine as I was only doing groundwork with her and popping on once a week.

Summer. They went out Good Friday, on whatever regime we wanted. There are only 2 owners of single horses, all others own 2 or 3. I am with other single owner on a paddock of approx 3/4 of acre, we have another field the same size so we can rest and graze at the same time iyswim.
Field has a big dip in it that is electric fenced off, all other fence is post and rail. Owner is slowly filling gap with hardcore so he can level and seed it. So far, ok.
But pony mine's out with trundles through this fence regularly and mine has too learnt the trick. Thing is, there are broken bottles, sewer pipes, metal pipes and all sort of nasties in there. Other owner isn't bothered, I am, to the extent that I have increased the fencing.
So, when I go on holiday, I have booked to take her elsewhere on holiday livery, for my own peace of mind.

People on the yard seem to have taken this as a personal insult. It isn't meant to be.
Today I've had ... well, she's not that special, why go to those lengths (£100 for 1 weeks hols livery).

TBH, I am flabbergasted. Yes, she isn't going to be a world beater but what difference should that make?

I don't question/comment on the way they keep their horses and quite frankly, I don't give a damn, so why don't they afford me the same privilige (sp)?
Think I'll be looking around for a new yard

Such a shame that people feel they have to comment at all if you decide to 'holiday' your horse somewhere else.

Cant you put her in the field that doesnt have a dip in it if you have two???

Agree that it is dangerous though... .will the YO not put better fencing round the pit till it is filled??
 
I would do exactly the same if I was in your situation. It is your mare and your money and if you wanted to spend £200 it is none of their business.
All that rubbish in the ground, even if they bury it under tonnes of soil, will eventually work it's way up out of the ground.
I think looking for a new yard would be on my list of priorities to
 
For me sounds like the are jealous. Personally I would be moving if you are not happy. Enjoy you holiday with the peace of mind you horse is safe.
 
Sounds like the usual livery yard dimwits, why should you risk your horse being injured, seems common sense to me. After suffering similar on a yard I would be looking to move.
 
£100.00 holiday livery or £250.00 vet bill for finding your horse impaled on something or its foot hanging off.......... HHHHmmmmm now let me think!
 
Tell them that you just don't trust ANYONE on your yard to keep a proper watch on your mare! That will make them sit up and think. It is your business how you spend your money at the end of the day. I am lucky to have a couple of very experienced friends who think the same thoughts as me where horse care is concerned, and I am perfectly happy to leave my retired, worthless and "common" mare with them. Likewise I return the favour and they know that anything in my care gets treated just the same as mine, and I copy their routine exactly for their animal.

Dip is in both fields, so swapping them over would not gain anything.

YO's take on fencing is ... if you don't like it, sort it yourself .... which is what I've done up to now.
As bad as this may sound, I'm loathe to throw good money after bad. I wouldn't take the fencing I have paid for if I leave but I don't want to be paying for more.
 
Why on earth wouldnt you take the fencing you have paid for?

Can you electify the fence? and when you say slowly filling the pit, how slow are we talking? Is there any way to speed up the process?

As for the other liveries - they are just jealous. dont let them make you leave a yard if it suits you otherwise (apart from the pits of course). You will get the same jealous dimwits at any yard.
 
Maybe they have nothing better to natter about, surely they should see where you coming from, doesnt matter how expensive the horse is, they all get injured the same way and it won't be much of a holiday for you if your worrying all the time about your horses well being, your doing the right thing, and its nobody elses business.

Sorry it sounds like you are having a bit of a rough time.
I think you have totally done the right thing in finding holiday livery somewhere, otherwise i am sure you wouldnt have enjoyed your holiday with worry.
If the YO wont put a safe fence up, i think i would move on... It would only take them maybe what? an hour or two to knock in some real post and put smooth wire on (if he wont put rails on) or something.

it isn't wrong to want the best for your mare, and ignoring the fencing problems could add up to some serious and expensive injuries - so for what it is worth I think you are doing the right thing

However i also think you worry too much about what other people think or say - which seems to be a common factor on this site - who cares what they think?
 
With all that rubbish in the middle of the field, fenced off or not, I would be moving.
At some time, according to Sods law, she will get in there and then what will happen? you may be lucky or you may have a disaster.
She is special to you and thats all that matters. The other people on the yard obviously do not feel the same about their horses, - do you really want to associate with people of that mentality in the first place?
Once your horse is injured its too late for recriminations and regrets.
