When horses at our yard see tractor it's a fire breathing monster!!! Out on the road that is.
Yet in the snow the farmer went into their field with two bales hay , one on either end of tractor and all of them followed him snatching mouths full as he drives along... Horses eh!!!

Simple: they can tell the difference between pony eating monster tractors, and pony feeding tractors!

My dad is a vet and used to give my pony both her breakfast every morning, and her jabs every year. She ALWAYS knew when he was coming over in "vet" mode. Then she had a moral conundrum: for the next few days, she hated him because he'd stuck a needle in her neck (and she hated needles!) but on the other hand...he was feeding her. You could see the dilemma that was going through her mind!

my horse didn't like tractors at all until i moved to a working dairy farm. now he loves the tractors on the yard and somehow can even tell the difference between them and others out on the road. if he sees a tractor he gets tense but once he sees it's the farmer he's fine. must have a certain smell to it! lol. i don't tense up or react any different to any tractor i see.
