why is life so cruel to those of us who look after our horses well???

RIP beautiful Troy and Beau. I lost my two within 6 months of each other and thought that was hard enough - but 3 weeks - those poor owners.

Life is unfair, and I am not sure that fate decides it should be, I think its just unfair sometimes. Those horses were loved and safe though, and whilst we say 'horses in unsafe etc conditions seem to get on fine' how often is it actually something has gone unnoticed and the horses needs are not being met so they are suffering...

Your friends are lucky to have a friend like you - without close friends I would've lost the plot when I lost mine - I too had intended to ride River to my wedding and Luca was a rescue case that despite the best care the vet and I could give him was just too damaged physically and mentally to be safe to be around...

I guess I am trying to offer them some comfort -that they did the right thing, the horses were lucky to have them as owners and you as a friend. Time will ease the passing but the pain will never disappear.

thank you everybody. i seem to be coping worse than them!!!! I spent sometime with Beau when they first had her through their honeymoon and then an operation. She was stabled with me for a short time and then i continued to ride her out with my friend. Beau and PIilgrim (one of my crazy horses) were bought nearly at the same time so they were brought on together ie, lessons together, show etc... Beau progressed much quicker than pilgrim (come to think of it i dont think we progressed at all :) ) and went on to event affiliated, DR winning for the riding club team and then turned her hand to point to point.

Its been nearly 18 month since i had anything to do with Beau other than annoying her with pulling equally ugly faces back at her over the door and yet i can't stop crying!!! Im not sure if it has anything to do with the fact that my parents are away and im working 13 hour night shifts and looking after the 14 horses on the yard and hence enough sleep is not really happening but i just can't believe its happend and i can't believe she has gone.

i am kicking myself i didnt listen to my friend better when she told me on thursday how worried she was about her. i spoke to my farrier at length about it yesterday and he suspects there was a second nail involve which did the damage as the one they pulled out just didnt appear to go deep enough. he said without anyone knowing there had been a much deeper wound no one would of realised straight awy the danger she was in.

and ironically yesterday it was my turn to panic, not sure who mentioned it but someone said on here it may highlight the importance of getting a nail hole checked......well i got up at 10am yesterday to put them all in the field to find a large nail in my mares foot. I have never had a nail in the foot before and i just couldn't believe what i was seeing.
No messing i rung my farrier and vet, by having 14 horses here i have a super realationship with them both. they were straight out, assessed the nail and removed. luckily although it went in 2 inches it went in at an angle which seems to of missed all the important bits. My heart sunk though. if she did not still have a foal at foot i think i would of boxed her and taken her to the hospital for xrays straight away. it did scare the life into me finding that.

my farrier came looking with me to find out where the nail had come from and he noticed the roof of their barn had come loose from the winds last week (i do live right on top of a bloody mountain) and as it was a roofing nail we guess it has fallen from there.

So Yes, unfortunatly Beau's death has highlighted the danagers so please dont ever remove a nail unless you have to...RING YOUR VET!!!!

sorry for the constant moaning, cheese cake for anyone who is putting up with me :)
