Riding hat is maybe 2 years old, fits well, i cant feel any lumps/bumps etc, not aware of dropping it etc. But every time I wear it now I get a headache at the right hand side of the front of my head.
Any ideas or is it time for a new hat?

Cant say without more details of hat but sometimes a new hat will be adjusted in the shop by the retailer inserting a band of foam under the ribbon round the edge of the hat. That padding could have slipped, fallen out or hardened with time.

Or you may have bumped your head (on a kitchen cupboard?) without realising it and your head is now sore.

Some people say one needs to replace a hat after 2 years.

This is more obvious with motorcycle helmets but yes, you do need to replace often but age is only a guide. Everytime you put the hat on and take it off you stretch it a tiny bit. All of those stretches weaken the structure very slightly. Someone wearing a hat every day and putting it on and off a few times a day will need to replace more often than someone who rides weekly and maybe hasn't been able to due the lockdown.
