Went along with the BF to see my horse this morning and she was a bit in your face but probably just because she associates him with food! Gently reminded her to keep her distance, wandered over to the grooming station with her at my side.

I don't normally tie her up to groom as she is a big fan of scratches and just stands, but when I got to doing her belly which she normally absolutely loves she started the ears back going to bite, told her off and then she bit me hard on the arm!

So I growled at her and stomped towards her to back her up which is what I normally do if she is being bolshy, then she reared at me which was unexpected! Stood my ground as best I could, got her headcollar on and took her back to pick her feet, she wasn't really having that either, but managed to do them all in the end with a bit more of an encouraging tone and then she seemed normal again.

She obviously didn't think much of my angry tone! Does this sound like she is just being mareish? I do not have much experience of mares being hormonal, apart from one and she was pretty much nasty most of the time!

I am a bit baffled by mares seasons to be honest, she seems to have had two individual week long 'flirty' episodes in the two or so months I had her, at which times she was her usual lovely self and not at all stroppy.

She is normally amazingly good on the ground, a bit bolshy when I first got her but with a wave of the hand she moves away and stands to wait for food etc. She is very quick to pick up on what you mean and quite trainable, but she is a tank and has definitely got to know her own strength at some point. I know she did parelli stuff with her first owner, can I just blame the P word? Haha!

A mare on my yard is currently in season and has spent the last few days biting her owner and 'mooning' over my gelding - I imagine a simliar scenario?

God love mares x

i think all mares are finding it a little difficult right now! dont know what to do with them selves..... the weathers been so weird, hot one mintue, cold another, and seasons that are irregual always seem to be worse/more painful
if shes feeling bad i expect her stomach and sides are feeling quite sore!

My mare kept spinning on me in the stable today like she was threatening to double barrel me.
Then a few hours later she was as right a rain again
I've put it down to change in the weather?

hmmmmm my mare was a complete and utter bitch the other day when i wanted to change her rug, she was threatening to bite and swinging round on me when i was trying to take the old rug off which is very unlike her, she hates being rugged up so usually happily lets you unrug her, she was the same to rerug and i admit to giving her a punch on the neck as she swung on me for the nth time:mad: i put it down to her being grumpier than normal rather than the unusually mild weather:o but that is more like her behaviour in spring when she gets her first season of the year.

Good to hear this. My mare got progressively more aggressive through October, so different to her usual self I got her scoped for ulcers (no ulcers present). She's better at the moment but still has the odd snappy day. She has never been a mareish mare before. Hopefully she'll settle down if its something that seems to be affecting lots if mares.

My mare has been tres weird - and indeed has come into season for sure (she was squitting at my gelding) which I would have thought was late frankly. She is a bit temperamental, nippy and ugly faces, and I really do think it's weather - hormone correlation. Doesn't help us mind you!!!

Oh thank god I thought I was starting on some terrible slippery behavioural slope! I was so surprised when she reared at me! You know when you try to sound really authoritative and really you'll poo yourself if they do it again haha.

She obviously didn't want to be messed with today, all I wanted was to get the worst of the mud off and do her feet, I even chopped up carrot sticks for her which she probably knew were in my coat hanging on the fence, well I saved those for later! Gave her a pile of hay with her feed too, she has loads of grass and I was saving it for a bit later but she really loves hay and I thought it might cheer her up if she's got lady pains on this bitter cold night bless her!

On another note the water trough keeps freezing and it is sooo annoying!

My youngster has been given an ASBO as her behaviour has been so bad lately. She has been good to catch for a couple of years and suddenly she has decided she does not want to be caught and will keep bogging off when you get within 6 ft of the moose  Have decided she can have the winter off as I really cannot be doing with chasing her round a 12 acre field. Other mare has decided today that she loves me (or the treats in my pocket  ) and followed me around the field today instead of being her normally aloof self

Oh the joys of having mares eh :p :D
