Why is my water trough overfilling?

I initially presumed it was to do with the ballcock being broken but I replaced it and it keeps doing it.
It’s a home made trough from an old bath if it makes any difference.
This was pre-cleaning it out on Saturday, the water level usually sits where the worst of the green algae is/where the ballcock is but it frequently over fills. Doesn’t seem to actually overflow though? Is it just from where we’ve had a lot of rain lately?! It did it over summer too though I recall.
(ps, no idea how those rocks got in there either!)

If you've replaced the ballcock and still problem is there then it is probably the valve which the ballcock arm feeds into which is the problem.

Unless you are proficient - and confident - I'd be inclined to ask a plumber to take a look tbh. Just a suggestion, and please don't think I'm being rude, but with horses about you really need to have that ballcock out of the way coz they're just gonna break it else.

Perhaps you could build up a little wooden housing around it to protect it??

Hate to say it but it might be cheaper - and more durable - to replace the whole shaboodle with a nice galvanised tank which has an enclosed compartment for the ballcock and mechanism.

If it's not overflowing then probably is the rain. I know my troughs have been self filling for the past few days (unfortunately). There was 8 inches of water in my wheelbarrow yesterday evening and we've had more rain since.

(Really MUST get myself a rain butt thingy!)

Did wonder if it was more of a plumber job, thanks mijods.
The metal sheet you can just about see to the right of the bath propped up actually slides on and roughly half covers the bath and is pretty sturdily in place so nothing can get at the valve/ballcock once it’s on :)

cross posted - I will keep a closer eye on it and whether it seems weather related then! It’s certainly been seriously soggy around here so could well be an option
