Why is there such a lack of show horses for sale in Scotland?

For months now, I have been looking for a decent show horse, riding horse or show hack type. I have spent a lot of money on ads, in practically every horse advert site on the web! Yes, I have had one or two replies ie. "I have a lovely hairy cob for sale" or "I have a fab horse, but it only has three legs, but would make a lovely show horse" (OK a bit of an exaggeration, haha!) but for goodness sake! I have been out of showing for years now, so do not really have any contacts.

I know there are a good selection in England, but have not got the time to travel.

Can anyone tell me where they get sold on to?

Have you spoken to any dealers as they can be good at buying a horse for you?

Yes, (only reputable ones) but never get back to me, after saying that they would let me know if they hear of, or see anything. Maybe I should just give up!

I think people only take you seriously, if you are already in the competition circles.

Probably because there aren't that many shows up here (I mean decent qualifiers etc.)? I wouldn't make showing my main disipline living up here purely because there aren't enough IMO (not compared to down south).

Where are you in Scotland? I know of a couple of people who source show horses very successfully

PS I have a show hunter I shall be advertising shortly (and would be happy to pick you up from our very local airport) but I'm in Gloucestershire :)

I completely agree with this! I had a very good small hunter/working hunter that I bred (Unintentionally but turned out that). I had planned on him being a dressage/event prospect but decided to sell as a show horse, he had qualified for blair working hunter champs ect but hadn't any other comp experience other than showing. I found there was no market for him as a show horse and decided to keep him for a few more years and do the dressage/eventing with him and this year sold him to a lovely eventing home.

If you want a top class show horse England is where to look. Showing is pretty big around cheshire I have found and you can get to many places there within 3.5 hours of central scotland

Most horses in Scotland will tend to be capable of doing a bit of showing but will ultimatley do something else as well.

Thanks. Unfortunately, I stay in North Scotland. Getting the time away is not easy. I do have friends I could stay with in Alderley Edge and look from there if I get the time.

By the way, where is your nearest airport?
