I got to the age where I wanted my own dog not one of mum's and they agreed I could have a small dog. I wanted to be like the girl in the Famous Five with my dog always there by my side to do everything (I was quite small then lol - I was nearly 14 by the time I actually got said dog). It had to be robust enough to live with 6 galumphing Gundogs hence having a JRT.
Millie is actually a horror mutt! She growls at people walking past the house, she growls at people she can't actually see but can hear walking past the fence (she'll actually throw herself at the fence!) she's not overly struck on other dogs but with time just ignores them, she's fab around the horses, she's tolerant of OH's kids, she's the best hot water bottle AND she has been my best friend and companion and done everything and anything with me (just like the book lol)
But she didn't want to do agility, she only wants to be a couch potato so when her daughter Mouse came back (Border Collie reincarnated!!) I trained her. Jim's just good for cuddles and a good game of rough and tumble.
I love the breeds enthusiam (except Millie) and challenge. They're very versatile little dogs, love swimming, coming hacking or happy to just plodge around the stables. Ok they're little gob*****es but it's nice to know they'll defend if necessary - if ankle biting ever becomes a terrifying prospect
My dogs and me spend most of our lives together. They travel brilliantly, they'll sit in the car when I'm at an appointment (or I can chuck them in a free stable and they won't jump out/make lots of noise).
They'll sleep for hours at home or spend all day running around with my horses. They don't try and eat my chickens (although I did have to train them for that one).
The only time they get left at home is when I go out for a hack - I'd love to take them but there is nowhere that is completely off road. If I'm riding in the field they come along! When they're at home, I know they won't raid the bin/chew the sideboards/strip the wallpaper/annoy the neighbours.
They're great with kids and with other dogs. I take them along to shows and events, and they come out on lead or wait in the lorry, I know they won't attack other dogs or get excited around the horses.
They very rarely bark - if someone comes to the door, Isa does her 'Lassie' - she runs in, nudges me, runs out. Runs in, nudges me, runs out ... (Shadow just sleeps through the whole thing)
They don't get on the bed unless invited, they don't get on the sofa unless invited. But they'll let me share their beds They enjoy hugs, brushes, cuddles, me moaning to them, and sometimes crying on them!
Isa (british inuit) is very 'person' orientated - she loves to do things to please me, she's very obedient (more by luck than judgement) and she's just the most amazing dog.
Shadow (collie x greyhound) is the comedy element - not the brightest (to put it mildly) and he makes us laugh every day. His only downfall is his recall is fairly bad, especially when there's something small and furry in the vicinity ...
I love them, they're fantastic, and yes, they're both perfect for me.
We decided on getting a dog back in 2008 and we decided that we wanted a rescue. We knew we wanted a mongrel of medium size and off we went to look.
We came home with Scoobie less than 48 hours later (we decided to get a dog on thursday, looked at him on friday, he was home on saturday afternoon) he is a big greyhound, was younger than we wanted, bigger than we wanted as well but he picked us so home he came!
He can play all day if he wants to but equally he can stay in and sleep all day which was lucky since he injures himself frequently! He can be walked for hours but is also happy with half an hour a day.
I can do agility with him, we're not great but he loves it and thats most important.
He has a massive personality, hes a grumpy so and so but I don't think he would ever bite, he just gets growly which was good for my little autistic brother as it taught him the respect a dogs space.
He's clumsy, daft, funny and you can tell what hes thinking just by looking at him. I can drag him to dog shows and he will behave pretty much perfectly.
The issues we did have with him are getting better all the time and he is 98% of the lead now which considering when we first got him he wasn't even allowed on a long line I think is a big accomplishment.
He can be trusted with horses, people, and most other dogs and hes turning out to be the dog we always wanted, a big heffalump who can happily sleep on your feet but will also play in the snow
