A friend of mine was riding her horse who she has owner for 2 years. They were schooling in the indoor arena. Horse is a warmblood x cob so not particularly sharp. He was cantering and tripped. She was thrown into the arena post, corner of the post impacted into helmet and it smashed into three pieces. It stayed intact by the outer surface but when apramedics took it off they dropped it on the floor about 1 foot and it literally broke into three. Imagine if that had been a naked skull? She has suffered a broken arm and was concussed. In my opinion that hat saved her life. Pointless post perhaps..... but just outlines how easy it is for something to happen.

Thats a really good point, it bugs me that people don't wear hats because they don't think their horse would throw them. You just never know and I don't see why the NHS should have to pick up the pieces because of people's vanity

I think you'll find that here on HHO, only novices wear hats. The very experienced riders don't have to, as their horses are too well balanced to trip or fall.

Hope your friend gets well soon.

I got concussion after my horse tripped and I fell off onto the tarmac drive.
I wasnt wearing my hat because I was riding him bareback out to the field. Never again!

A lesson for us all to listen to i think

I know someone who rides in a baseball cap all the time, cos.... she won't fall off, and her horse is not naughty

My ex never used to do his hat up, which to me is as bad as not wearing one

Surely it's obvious, hats were designed for a reason. OK we look a bit dippy in them, but would rather be alive and look a little daft, than dead or severely brain damaged

The other week I went to harrow the menage at a quiet yard and a girl was riding her horse without her hat on - it was the middle of the day on a sunday with no-one else around on a really quiet private yard down a quiet private lane. The horse wasn't bombproof either as it shied at the tractor

Did she not think what would happen if she fell off and hurt herself - she could have been lying there for hours before someone came along

I remember seeing some top dressage peeps donning hats rather quickly when told that the final prizegiving ceremony at a dressage event would be at the far side of a college campus, where they'd have to hack through fields to get there.
Not all of them made it

my friend was wearing her hat when she jumped sussex and she came off in a sadnschool and stll managed to fracture her skull!!!

I always wear mine i would feel really odd without it

I fell off when I was ten and hit my head on a dry stone wall - the hat shattered. I've worn when riding ever since - I usually wear one when lunging but I have been known to forget

I hate it how people say that it will never happen to them, they are being extreamly arrogant and narrowminded to think that.
As Donkeymad said, it can happen to everyone. Regardless of what horse you are sat on.

Nah. Only novices.
Experienced riders can 'feel' if their horse is going to have a heart attack etc....and of course their horses are too well schooled to stumble.
And if you're suggesting that horse and rider could part company - never!
You must be a novice.

Of course I am foolish to think such a thing, obviously I have misjudged what an experienced rider and horse are capable of!

I forgot to mention that if an experienced rider did become unseated hatless (due to freak events), they would lithely vault onto their feet, not fall like either a pile of rubble or a drunken rhino, as we novices do.
It's an important distinction.

PS Hurrah for evolution!

Now now Shilsdair!!!! No nasty comments about these brilliant riders who can't even FIND a hat fro a photo op when Horse mag comes calling. We will be getting an irate mail from them soon.

i always wear a hat when handling my youngster - lunging, taking to and from the field, etc etc

I had an incident when i was riding her for the second time where a lot of things came together at once and she BLEW - bronked like mad - so much so i ended up BEHIND the saddle, feet out of the stirrups as she bronks about. Ended up pushing myself off and as im in the air, her back feet connect with my leg and push me into the arena wall. Landed on the floor straight onto my back and when i got up and took my hat off it broke in half!!!!!!

I cant believe people that DONT wear hats - its a little thing and can save someones live!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You are a breath of fresh (or sulphurous I guess

) air.... Thank you for making me laugh on a dull morning (and for saying something, in a humorous way, I'm not brave enough to say incase I get flamed - I'm such a wuss)!

Years ago i was riding my pony on a busy mane road (he was bomb proof) He was as good as gold. I had my hat on, but not strapped up. We were riding over a zebra crossing(it had a shiny surface) and he just lost his footing and fell over i came of and my head slammed onto the road. My hat did stay on at impact but then bounced off. i was extremely lucky and sam(my pony) just got up and stood by my side untill i got up.

Always do the strap up once you have put your hat on

My horse slipped out on a hack and fell sideways, I must have 'bounced' my head on the tarmac as I was knocked unconscious. The hat was broken in two places but I only had minor concussion. The horse did nothing wrong other than slip and it wasn't even a frosty day, just a worn bit of asphalt, so it could have happened to anyone at any time. With the youngsters I wear a hat when lungeing and leading, as they sometimes try to play with their front legs (bloody scary!).

It was one of those ones with the stone 'spikes' on top - I took the point off the spike but otherwise it remained in tact and we're still on speaking terms
