Why lie?!

its funny because at work we are all like "i'm a rubbish rider". noone bigs themselves up and everyone is very honest (well i think) yet you go out into the big horsey world and everyone is an expert and suddenly knows your horse better than you (even though you have owned it 5 yr and nursed it through numerous problems)

i will quite happily give my opinion if asked but at the same time i'm not an expert so can only give just that "my opinion"

p.s my horses are 15.3 and 16.1 measured them on a stick for that very reason lol

I think that’s a bit harsh K!

Most of us ‘Equine Students’ have smaller horses at home but have outgrown them or they can’t be ridden, due to age, injury etc.

Although some of us jump courses of 1.20m whilst schooling at uni, nobody currently competes at any bigger than 1m.

Nobody on the yard has a ‘17.2hh BSJA standard horse’ that I can think of!

I don’t think anybody I consider myself to be friends with ‘bigs themselves up constantly’ at all.

Sorry, but I think it’s quite unfair to pass such comment when I don’t think you have really seen any of our horses 'in the flesh' ... or the hard work that gets put into them EVERY day around our degree work to get them to their current standards ;)

As I said, not all of them ;) just many I have met, both at uni and at work here at home
K x

I would question whether people are knowingly lying or actually believe the codswallop that comes out concerning size of horse, rider ability, how difficult horse is to ride etc etc etc.
May I refer the learned jury to the threads often appearing on here entitled "Do you let other people ride your horse?" and to the number of responses that go along the lines of "No, my horse can be very difficult so I wont risk anyone getting hurt" or "Its taken so long to get my sesitive horse to work properly I wouldn't risk someone else uspetting him/her" etc etc etc.
The implication being only they are capable of riding said horse ;)

PS I'm very average and so is my 19.3 horse that can jump 7' high, 8' wide oxer from trot. Honest :p

Yep this ^^^^^^ I get heartily sick of all the people who give it all that "no one else can ride my horse" carp then you see them and you realise that they won't let anyone else ride their horse because they can't handle the fact that it might go better for someone else!

One thing I always have to chuckle at really is when people like to suggest their horse is very difficult to ride and/or handle (when it isn't) as they feel it will make them sound like a better horseperson/rider etc. What can make you more proud or appear more capable than a horse that is well behaved & mannerly to ride and handle?! ;)

That is so true! I have a horse that is easy to do most of the time, and I certainly boast about it. My last horse was too much for me to handle really, and I certainly didn't like to talk about it. People are weird!!

i'll admit, i'm an average rider, but it's pushy mothers who boast about their child's amazing abilities and how they're going to be on team GB in 2012, yawn yawn yawn etc.. and then when you see the person ride, all the ego boosting and bulls*** all comes crashing down!
the same with people who buy horses for 6/7/8/9k and say that they're amazing. well just because they paid that much doesn't mean the horse is the best thing since sliced bread!
gosh, lying burns my head out (N)
rant over :)
(god i feel refreshed!):D

Sorry this lie is not horsey related but still funny I think!! We have a chap at work who could lie for England. He has royal relatives and owns land in Scotland etc. If you have done it, he has done it bigger and better, know the type?!! Well we were getting p'd off with this so a little while ago someone brought in some jelly bean sweets to share. We got the black ones out and put them in a separate bag and labelled them Peruvian chilli beans! We asked this chap if he had got a green house would he like to grow some? 'O YES PLEASE' was the reply! So off he goes with his beans. About a week later we asked if they had grown! ' I havn't planted them yet he said but my wife (teacher) has taken some into school and they are shooting already!!! A few days later he told us that he had planted his. A week later they to had grown!! Well trying not to laugh when he was telling us this was a bit difficult!! We then asked him to bring one in to show us as we had never seen one before, unfortunately they had died!!! What a shame!!What a liar!!

I would never lie about my abilities as I'm worried that I would have to do something to prove it! I've been riding since I was little (now grown up (!) with children of my own), but if I ever go riding on holiday I always say I'm not a beginner, but never say I'm experienced. We regularly go to Montana to a ranch, and it's only having been there a few times that the wranglers give me some of the slightly more difficult horses to ride as they know I can manage them (I'm not lying here, promise! They are the sort of horses that need riding rather than just carrying a load, but certainly not dangerous or mad!). But it is only through what they have seen rather than what I say. But every time we go there will be people who are saying they are experienced, and when it comes to loping (cantering) they are the ones who are hanging on for dear life, or falling off as the case may be (and mostly without hats, unlike us very odd British people!!). I did a four hour ride one day last year (which is for people who are not necessarily stylish, but who are capable of going at a reasonable pace for a reasonable part of the ride). We ended up walking most of the way as someone (new that year - most people are returners, the same people each year for that week) had talked up their ability and said they loved loping when actually they had only trotted a few times. Trouble was we were half an hour from the ranch by this point and couldn't go back. Result, one pretty p***ed off wrangler, several bored horses and several dudes (us!!) who had plenty to bitch about once we got back to the bar that night! So please if any of you ever go to Montana on holiday and go to a ranch the same week as me, if you can ride - fine. If you can't ride - fine also. But please don't go on the day rides if a little loping will cause you to squeal!! It doesn't half annoy the rest of us. :D :D :D

Not a lie (well maybe it is, not sure) but people around me seem to have this thing about how big their horse is!! It's like no-one likes to own a little horse so their horse is at least 16.3hh when quite clearly it isn't! Drives me nuts. What's wrong with having a 16hh?

That is so true. I was recently looking for a new horse - and went to see two horses advertised as 15.2 who were both 16hh at least!

My favourite 'lie' is when people tell you they came 1st / 2nd in a class - and you later find out there was only 2 people in it!! Guess ts not a lie - but its definately not the whole truth

This is the funniest thing i've heard all day/week/year even, still laughing!

Oh yes i know several people in the dressage world that do that on a regular basis. Oh yes i won the PSG at xxxxxx & when you look it up they were the only one in the class & they got like 57% or something similarly "amazing" :p

I have won classes with only 4 in & i have always made a joke of it! Proud to have won yes, but not ashamed to admit to there only being 3 or 4 in the class!

Liars do always get caught out in the end :)

Jump heights always make me laugh. I know someone who has a photo on FB (no one on here LOL ) saying the fence is 3ft8...it isn't even 3ft - WHY LIE? Time and again people fib about jumping heights, I can never understand why one cannot be content with what they have.

I was just about to post this! :D

Me and Weezy do the opposite (accidentaly!)- we have been jumping "1.05m" when in fact we've been jumping 1.10/1.15m without realising! :p

Have a nasty feeling I am the one being targeted for the picture that is 3ft8, as people told me at the time it wasnt! If I am it was genuinely measured, there is a picture somewhere with a tape measure clearly by it!

Another classic lie seems to be under doing height of 17hh'ers when looking for Pickle 18hh's were being sold as 17.1hh, and 17hh.1's as 16.3hh utter madness. Ability wise the uni riding club we have this problem, people insiting they can join a group intermediate lesson with no ability to even do rising trot!

Sorry if the same has already been said (haven't read whole thread :o ) but the thing that confuses/irritates me most is when people constantly talk about their plans to do this that and the other, and conveniently forget that the day before they were sh!tting themselves about leading their horse, and now they are entering Olympia, Badminton and Burghley (well maybe not but yknow :p ) and talk down to others from their position on high, giving them extremely condescending advice etc.

Sorry if that made no sense, I had someone in mind when I was typing and got carried away :o
Nothing like a small rant of a Tuesday evening :p

I dont think this tendancy for 'exageration' (AKA lying!) is exclusive to the horsey world. It's like any sport people take up as a hobby - participants are often competitive amongst themselves.

Expect it's just as rampant amongst golfers, squash players, footballers, etc! :D

when I went to get my last horse from a racing yard a few weeks ago, I told the girl there who was showing me the horses that i was a complete novice really - mainly because I wanted one that wouldn't be too testing. I didn't tell her that I already had one ex-racer. I ended up with a star. She fitted me with a lovely mare with a quiet temperament. I can't see the point of saying how good you are - you will always come a cropper!

Yay, well said :) I am average and proud!

We should start a "We are average riders" clique ...

I'm hoping to be average one of these days instead of cr*p!
And I love shows where there are only a few in the class as its my only chance of getting a rozzie!
And my pone is a miniscule 15.1 effort!
Oh dear!

i have done this for a joke once told this girl who though she was amazing and always lied about placings etc. that we had come 3rd (true) 24 hours i told her it was out of 3 and we had been eliminated at the 5th jump. i don't care about placings but the look on her face when i told her was priceless

I couldn't lie to save my life and tend to believe most of what I'm told on the basis if I wouldn't make it up, why would anyone else?

It does upset me when people turn out to be not what you thought, but I have a pretty good instinct for picking out people not to trust.

They'll pretty much fall on their arse at some point. Lying about how high you jump, wins and suchlike is truly pathetic - why would you anyway? Lying about a horse's faults, when selling is diabolical.

I've always found it's much better to understate your ability - then people will be much more impressed when they see you ride!!

I will always cherish the memory of when I went to visit a workmate's '5 talented showjumpers' - equine shantytown filled with the dregs of horse society - practically emaciated, hairy downtrodden nags, 4 out of five died over the next couple of years due to ragwort poisoning (and these horses had been there for life). The last was PTS due to laminitis, it was so obese for so many years its pedal bones rotated right through its soles.

Hilarious (well, the lies were - the fact the horses died was not). After that, her 'critique' of my riding/horsemanship was always put neatly into perspective. :)

Oh sorry I read your post where you said ‘when I was at uni the equine students’ .. and seeing as I am one of them I felt the need to defend myself, and my friends, and the things you were claiming about us ;)

No, no, maybe I didn't make it clear enough, sorry - its true I have met a few at uni (a couple from Junxions spring to mind), but as you know yourself when we started uni I stated I was glad you (or anyone else in our block) weren't one of them!
But you also know when I was working at the vets, some of the aux nurses (doing equine studies) became very bitchy and we also had an equine studies facility at college where I came across many people who hadn't the ability to tell the truth or listen to other people.
Not saying and never have done that horsey studies people are all like that and I'm glad they're not!
I think its just the horse world in general.:)

I only enter classes with less than 6 in it - it's the only way I can get a rosette! :p

The thing that really gets my goat is the whole;

“my horse is nuts, completely crazy, I am so brave riding him” yadda yadda yadda

It seems the more badly behaved and more issues your horse has the better more experienced rider you are?

Am I unique in feeling immensely proud of the fact that my just 5 year old, behaves perfectly and is a complete humpty dumpty to handle and ride? Frankly I would be mortified if he acted like a complete arse.

Personally I think a well behaved, sensible relaxed horse is a real compliment to the owner (and I am not getting at anyone who has a hot headed horse just those who seem to revel in it).

My YO’s favourite saying is “look at how your horse is behaving, now look in the mirror”

OK Middle aged rant over now!

Reading these posts made me smile and reminded me of an incident a couple of years ago - I loaned a very capable but older horse to a woman I met through an ad. She had done this, that and the other but stopped to have a baby. The local riding club had a teach in with a very wellknown Instructor and she said she would take my horse for a bit of a laugh!
This horse was a schoolmaster. When she rang to book the session they asked her what height she wanted to jump and she chose the higher class, as it was being split into 2. I would have gone for the lower everytime. Anyway, he started off with crosspoles and she let the horse run out with a bit of a shreik! I was there, camera poised, he sussed her out straight away and so she handicapped the rest of the people by having to have the jumps lowered etc. Then came the gridwork, she screamed her way through it once or twice with a run out at the 3rd element, the final time he stood by the wings...you guessed it, he jumped her off, she got concussion, I had to take the horse home, look after her etc. etc. It taught her a lesson though-I don't reckon she had ever jumped more than 1'6" and we were looking at a 3' teach in! Funnily enough, after that we became good friends!

Im glad this happens everywhere :), and yes everyone has a horse that is huge, mental and can jump 1.20m :p, and never more than on a livery yard that is dominatad by 14yr old girls!
And as a proud pony clubber im afraid that it is rife, and if ur horse bucks, jumps, rears someone else allways has got a horse that does that all the time and much bigger and more impresive
and if a horse regually jumps out of its field over a 1.20 fence, does not allways mean that it will go and jump a foxhunter :p
happy times

How true that is :) I had a horse when I was a teenager was at a show and due to very bad weather class was moved onto sand arena which was parted off by fences, my darling horse bolted off and jumped the partition fence shame I couldnt make the him jump the actual course :). Worse though was he jumped straight into the lead rein class :o.
When I was teaching we used to do new clients assesment lessons if they said they could ride but for a few weeks had a lady who was new in the office and just booked on a girl on the advanced jumping lesson. :( There was 6 in the lesson and the girl who had told me at start she used to own her own horses and used to jump and xc and had a year off after her horse was pts could not even ride a 20m circle or rise to the trot without taking the horses teeth out :(. I had to pull her up and take her off the lesson :o

this!!!!!

id quite happily put 99% of people on my 5yo, and nothing gives me greater pleaure than when people have a lovely ride and find him dead easy.means im doing my job half decently!

Sod you all. My horse has wings and flies over the jumps.

Seriously though, be honest, we all do it! Clearly, because everyone on here is saying they never do, but we all know people who do!!!!
