May be silly question but I only use an rug if my horse is wet after riding never in other situations.....
I germany my horses lived always grazing 24/7 in Winter too without a rug
And I never had any problems

Please explain why so much people use turn out rugs stable rugs etc

I use a turnout rug as my horse is fully clipped in winter so has no coat to protect him from the elements. He hunts twice a week therfore has to be clipped.

He does not have a stable rug - I use his same turnout rugs in the stable.

If I had an unclipped horse that wasn't working, I would not rug it unless in extreme wet or cold.

Hope that helps!

The weather in the UK winter is usually wet and muddy. People who have limited time due to work/school/college/family commitments like to be able to ride their horses. Horse who has been in wet muddy field all day long without a turnout rug may be caked in wet mud so when owner arrives to ride they have to wait a long time for horse to dry to clean off mud before riding. Horse turned out in turnout rug in wet, muddy conditions is dry and clean enough to have saddle put on as soon as owner brings horse into stable.

Who cares?

Why does it matter to you what other people do with their horses? Or did you purposefully just want to start a debate?

Lots of people clip their horses because they would sweat loads when working so then have to put rugs on.. Surely they do that in Germany as well (genuine question)?

I rug mine sometimes when it is snowing or raining, as she lives out 24/7 and although she could definitely cope (haflinger!) I think it is more comfortable for her not to be wet when the temperatures are going towards minus 5 etc.

Do I suspect a wind up?!!!

My hunter would sweat excessively if he was not clipped, leading to possible loss of condition.......do you not know anything about horses?!

Is it just me, or does anyone else think saying 'use the search button' is the internet version of yawning in someone's face and saying 'BORING' when they ask you a question... Just saying!

Two main reasons.

My horse is clipped. He is clipped because I need to work him and it isn't fair for him to get very sweaty which he would if he wasn't clipped. So he needs a rug to replace the warmth.

It is also wet and muddy in his field. I don't have an hour every day to clean the mud off him when I want to ride, because I work full time.

In Germany you will not find many people that clipp their horses in my stable was not one!! I have seen that for competion horses but for happy hucker, or hunting not very often
Because the most people like to groom and spend time with their horses how long it ever takes (competion riders are diffrent I know )

Sorry for that question I don't want make any people angry it was only that I see a lot more horses in a rug outside in the UK than in Germany
So maybe it is because in Germany the most yards have an dry box which can be used for everone in the stable so I see thats here not so??

If this is a genuine poster, than that is an excellent attitude to have :D

My main reason would be, because although everyone says 'their horses, in the wild they wouldnt wear rugs' we have chosen to adapt horses to do what we want, therefore we need to make sure they are looked after to our best ability.

Every horse is different, and I understand why some people don't however it depends on the horse and how they would cope. Don't think you can ask such a broad question.

My horse is clipped down his neck, chest, under his belly just where he sweats when worked, although he doesn't do a great deal in the winter, so he needs a bit of protection and warmth. But what he really needs is protection from MUD. We have a special sort of mud that dries like concrete so if he didn't have a rug it would take me all my limited time to scrape off a space for the saddle to go, rather than use that time for exercise!

Fair do's - I am aware that different countries manage horses in different ways and hope we have all helped.

SO that was reason of my question we do diffrent things and if my new horse arrive I will be prepeared for that.

That the mug and anything else make it so hard to keep him clean and warm

AGAIN SORRY TO ASK A QUESTION I WILL NOT DO IT AGAIN!!!

Mainly because they're my neddies and what I say goes.

TB 1 wears them for obvious reasons.

TB 2 has just come out of racing, so wheres one for obvious reasons again.

Sec A 1 wheres thin ones because she looks fab in a coat and shes a grey so therefor automatically attracted to rolling in poo.

Maybe we have different conditions in the UK than you have in germany. A lot of horse owners work and do not have loads of hours to spend waiting for their wet muddy horse to dry out to be able to brush the mud off and put a saddle on. We tend to have plenty of rain and mud in the winter. If there is a lot of rain there is a risk of rain scald as well. My pony got rain scald last year in the spring after being out without a rug in lots of heavy rain so I have to be careful now about making sure he is dry in very wet weather.

My pony is clipped so rugged but even before he got clipped once it started to get a bit more muddy due to the rain and he loves rolling in mud I put his LW turnout on him as other he would be covered in wet mud and it would take a long time to wait for him to be dry enough to ride. I don't want to bring my horse in for hours to dry out before I can ride him.

We also have more native and cob types perhaps in the UK compared to germany that grown very thick winter coats so to do any fast work it is much more comfortable for them to be clipped. My friend has a german warmblood and he is not clipped because his winter coat is not very thick my native pony is like a mammouth so has a totally different type of fur. His coat is so thick he can get sweaty in walk even and if he gets wet or muddy his coat takes ages to dry out.

I have written in my Thread that I'm from germany and the only reason was why the people here doing it?
Because I'm not in the position to know all things about horse managing in the UK
because my horse from Germany which I bring with me to the UK which had pts last year has lived in my Garden so close to me and for me it is passion to groom etc and to keep horses SAFE but my opinion is That a horse is a horse and everyone should accept them as they are. But I fully accept all other peoples opinion when they think their horses are better clipped than it is there opinion OK for ME.
I think as an foreign to ask a question about that was only to understand how, why manage their horses in that way and I'm not silly to understand that.

Regards
Daniela

I only ever rugged an elderly bag of bones with poor weight etc in last years. But today I met a lady with a lovely hairy cob and it had full rug/neck. When I stroked the horse it was really sweaty under the rug but clearly she thought it was best wrapped up nice and warm...perhaps I should have said something ..I just mentioned that I never rugged. But the only time rugs were used to keep clean from mud(not warmth etc ) Most dont need them or they should be taken off ASAP. My rule for oldie was below 5 cent it went on and above 5 cent it stayed off. Yes I took it off during day and put on in evening if needed.

Nice to hear that my sight of the things are not so wrong :D

perhaps take a dose of your own advice, if you'd used the search function you could have found out that the OP is from germany now living in the uk, perfectly acceptable to ask why we do things so different i think:rolleyes: perhaps you may learn something too!

downright rude if you ask me!
