why oh why is the grass always greener on the other side?

I am so annoyed with my cob Tess. Yesterday I took my dogs on a quick walk round the block when I set off the horses were at the gate so I gave them both a stroke and set off. 20 minutes later I returned, went straight to the stables to open the doors up ready to bring the girls in, while I am doing this I can hear shouting so I look across to the field to see our neighbours (who I don't always see eye to eye with) shouting and waving at me. I run down to where they are to find Tess stuck in the ditch! There is absolutely no grass where she was as its kind of scrub land and she had a huge pile of haylage in the field, plus the field is not completely bare if they venture down the bottom but they tend to hang around where I put the haylage, but yet she'd decided to trash the perfectly decent fence and go through to the other side and proceed to shred her turnout rug on all the branches, brambles etc surrounding the ditch.

When I went to catch her she was completely caught up in all the brambles and refusing to move as they were caught in her tail, tangled in her feathers and mane and she had a branch virtually up her bum!!

So my question is why do our lovely horses feel the need to do silly things like this? I could understand if it was lush grass on the otherside! Plus this now means I am going to have to repair the fence and go turnout rug shopping grrr! but I suppose I should be grateful that my other mare didn't follow otherwise I would be buying 2 new rugs.

my friend knows how you feel at the moment her cob keeps barging a fence down to get into this inclosed area for no reason there is no grass what so ever

Its so frustrating, she does have a habit of fence trashing but usually there is a valid reason e.g. in summer she has to wear a muzzle rather than being stripped grazed as in her eyes a small shock of an electric fence is worth it to get to the other side. We have fairly recently had all of our other field post and railed and 1 side of the field she was in, but as the other 2 sides have a very substatial hedge along them and this side had the ditch, dense brambles and lots of trees, I thought she would be perfectly fine with post and wire- I guess she has just proved otherwise! I am gonna put a strand of electric along that side once the other fence is up, but not sure it will make any difference if she wants to go through!

maybe you should try putting a electric fencing with a bit more voltage up if this boesnt work maybe post and rail in one case maybe this wont stop her if she wants to get there it doesnt for my friends horse

well I am hoping it is a one off rather than a habit, she has never done it before, I am just gonna put the fence back as it was initially with the electric infront for the time being and hope she doesn't go through again. I just couldn't believe that she would even attempt to go there as it is proper wilderness, and very annoyed that she had completely trashed her turnout rug- AGAIN!

At least it was just a damaged turnout rug,and no damage to her!

At present I'm waiting to get a call from the Golf Club that borders our field telling me they have one fat horse roaming across the golf range.......have warned YO that if that is the case I know nothing!

true, I could do without vet bills at the mo, but she escaped unscathed- haven't even found a scratch, but my legs are scratched to death from catching her but think her feathers saved hers! I don't think Tess would be able to resist the temptation of a golf course, she has already ended up in our front garden once many years ago but that was when she let herself out of her stable- she will do anything for food, which has its good points coz if she wont do something wave a carrot under her nose and suddenly she changes her mind

I thought you were going to say she had got stuck in the ditch ! it could have been worse, at least there are some sales on now, fingers crossed you can find a rug in her size in a sale.

You have all my sympathy. My little sh*tland learnt from another escapee at the yard that it's fun to trash electric fencing and get through to the next paddock. I understood to an extent, as the grass on that side was ungrazed since last Spring. However, 4 strands of tape later, he decided that another paddock was then fair game. Last count, 5 strands of tape, all electrified. He puts his head below the bottom one and in one forceful move, flips the lot over his back. The new paddock has no more grass than the one where he's supposed to be! I re-adjusted the fence for the millionth time last night and still had to retrieve the little sh*t this morning. I'm going to sell him to the hunt kennels at this rate, little sod!!!

*cough* frustration coming out, there, lol. This has been going on for 3 weeks now!
