do kids - ie teenagers have horses/ponies when they dont have a clue on equine care and management but just love to get on and gallop around and jump the guts out of the poor thing??? really gets my goat!!!!

I used to know quite a few of these. Made me really mad because they had no respect for their ponies, they just wanted to ride them all of the time and weren't interesting with looking after them or spending any time with them on the ground. I really don't know how they can be like that as when I was their age, I treated my pony with respect and never over worked or over jumped him. I loved spending time with him on the ground as much as riding him.

TBH I remember trying to do this and getting boll***ed by my mum or someone elses mum... no one is willing to do this any more and if they do the kids don't desist anyway... Kids will be kids it's up to the rest of us to teach them about respect...

Although I am myself a teenager, I do understand what you are talking about as I've known people like you describe and it disgusts me, but this has also been known in adults too. I have a horse and my main priority is his care and health which has been a real learning curve for me and I know plenty of other teenagers that have these same values and have worked hard to get a horse. So I don't believe that teenagers in general should be represented as bad at horse care.

Probably for the same reason grown ups have horses they don't let out of the stable and apparently have to clip even though it isn't in work because apparently it hates being out so much it gallops around when it's finally let out for two hours after the whole week in its stable when all the others are out. (sorry but new livery is an absolute moron and I'm getting increasingly frustrated by this!)

Because anyone can buy a horse and you can't offer advice because people just get offended. It's a shame but what can you do?

I am a teenager, and I'm not like this at all as I know about fitness etc., how important it is to do other things than galloping around. I do take Wings galloping for fitness work, but not how you have described. There are some kids at my yard who do as you've described, never hack (or when they do, hammer their horses along the roads and gallop in fields) or just stay in the arena and canter and canter and canter and jump and jump and jump. Needless to say I put them straight, and if they don't listen to me (I am fairly experienced and know what I'm talking about), I go and tell their mums :p :D

I do know people like this. However its not teenagers I know who behave like this...its adults. I am a teenager and my pony is my world. She is worked hard, like many other horses - ie lots of fun rides and hacks out for hours on a Sunday. BUT she is fit for her work load!! She is my total pride and joy and there is NO way that I would "use and abuse her"
