I'm getting myself in a tizz and at my age its just plain stupid.
I'm having a lesson at 1.00 this afternoon my first lesson on my new youngter and I am soo nervous.

I keep telling myself he'll be fine , its not like I've never ridden him before, I know my instructer well so why is it I can't keep off the loo and feel sick every time I look at the clock getting nearer to 1.00pm.

Doesn't help with the c$ap weather we are having , see I keep making excuses up when really I'm having a confidence issue- there I've said it, do I feel better NO!.

If it makes you feel better im 23 and have had real confidence issues with my young horse. I backed her, first horse I have ever done, with the help of my instructor. But she is very sharp and even though I was the first person to canter her and take her over poles, I am now at a point where if I canter her its a big deal. Its so silly!

Just be confident and postive!

Oh to be 23 again, I'm 42 and really ought to be able to deal with it by now.

He's very green but not put a foot wrong so far so really I haven't a valid reason for feeling like this.

I feel such a wuss!

I am 36 and have had my horse for 7 years and I still feel sick just before a lesson! As for going to horse shows, I cant sleep or eat about a month before and have given up.

You will both be fine and I am sure you will surprise yourselves and learn lots.

take long deep breaths and keep thinking relax relax relax.

Good luck and enjoy!

hb6 - I'm sure once I get going I'll be fine, and yes your right I have to relax once I'm on him in order for him to relax, because its new for him as well.

Just be glad when its over with, god to think I'm paying good money to feel like this too.

I do the loo thing (repeatedly) before any lesson, show, clinic, etc!!! It's perfectly normal, we all get very nervous all the time (don't ask me why we do it!).

Try to relax and think about what would help: would you feel better if you lunged first? Or if you walked the horse in hand a bit before you got on? It's your lesson so start with that if you want to.

Are you riding him in the same place as usual, if so then the instructor is the only difference. Is she likely to bully you into doing more than you think you could/should? Can you tell her how you feel and ask her to give you an easy time this time? If all else is the same, except the instructor, remember the last time you worked him in that area and try and recreate that feeling in your mind and body. Hope this is of some use

Sure its not nerves of excitement?

I love getting youngsters going I find it interesting to find out how their brains work/ what makes them tick/ what they enjoy/are afraid of.etc etc etc

I love my lessons - Ive fallen off more times than I can count from youngies dirty stops/broncs/ spooks etc in front of a **** event rider - she laughs - I laugh - horse then goes well and we get the results we want.

If its just butterflies then thats good so long as you dont pass on your nerves etc to horse.

However if I was feeling physically sick I would be somewhat concerned..

Enjoy your lesson - its what their there for.

Daisy, I am sure a lot of it is anticipation, once you are mounted you will be concentrating so much on your horse that you will forget to be nervous, promise.

It happens to me and each time it is worth it, the more lessons you have the easier it becomes.

Think reeelllaaxxxx think breeeaatthhhee.

I know I sound like a new age freak, but it really works! x

Booboos - at this moment in time he doesn't lunge more a case of not understanding than won't and I'm having someone experienced with me tomorrow to start us off properly.

YorksG - No my instructer will not bully she is really fab and she knows I want to start off slowly and correctly. Yes she is coming over to me this time and I will ride in the school in which I have previously ridden him in.

train-robber it may be nerves of excitement , but more like apprehension nerves, just wondering how he will take to being asked to do things he more than likely has been asked to do before.
With my old hosre I was having lessons twice weekly and that didn't bother me because I trusted him implicitly. I suppose I haven't built that trust in my new one yet , its very early days.

I will ,i'm sure ,enjoy it once we both get going.

hb6, at this moment I'm burning the incense sitting crossed legged on the floor chanting "relax you silly woman relax".

Your right as soon as I'm mounted I'll be concentrating that hard I'll not have time to be nervous and will be counting down the days to my next lesson.

I think though its the type of person I am, getting myself wound up in many a situation and its never as bad when it happens.

I completely get where you are coming from, I have a sj lesson tomorrow at 2pm, looking forward to it & last time Paul said she jumped fab & I rode really well, praise indeed!! However, with 23 hours to go I am starting to feel nervous, haven't a clue why, just do. Saturday we have a show, the first one for ages because of various stuff, don't even get me started on that, do want to go, but don't at the same time if that makes sense. Good luck with your lesson, it will be over by now & I'm sure it went well, have you tried some breathing exercises?? I also did some TFT with Jo Cooper, google her. Good luck, post & let us know how it went!!

Daisy Duck - LOL
thats similar to what I do!!

Try saying very slowly ree-laaxxx, reee-laaxxxx. Try missing out the silly woman bit! (even though it is funny) aim for positive vibes

Breathe - in 1 2 3 out 1 2 3.

Once you have had this 1st lesson you will be counting the days excitedly until the next!

I am similar, I always get myself into a state and once the situation is over, I wonder what all the fuss was about, but each time I cant help it.

I am getting myself in a state thinking about taking Jake to the vet school on thursday. I am not actually taking him, I have a slipped disc, so OH is and I am worried sick about both of them and what the vets might find wrong with Jake.

remember reellaxxx

x

Well I reeeally reellaxxxed and guess what ? my instructer didn't turn up aaaaah!!.

I saw her when I went to pick my children up from school, the penny dropped and I could tell she had genuinely forgotten, didn't help me much mind you.

Well anyway its been re arranged for Friday, I rode him for just over an hour , a nice start followed by a sticky middle, ending nicely. I just need to get him low and long which seems nigh on impossible.

hb6, fingers crossed for your Jake and for you also hope you are feeling better soon.
