I'm really worried about my westie Maccy he is really under the weather and not himself, He is also not eating and having trouble gooing to the toilet. The vet says its just his back hurting him ( he is on painkillers for this back and has been for 6 months) and to up his dosage but I think its his kidneys.

I had his brother Scotty as well and last year he got ill ( same syptoms as maccy is having now) the vet wouldn't take me seriously then either, it turned out that Scotty had 3 tumors in his kidneys and one of his kidneys had actually been swallowed by the tumor! He was put down that day.

So I don't get why the et wouldn't take me seriously this time round? He wouldn't even do a blood test!!!! Why won't they listen! I know the dog better than they do!!!

I've seen 3 vets from the same practise! I've got an appointment again this afternoon and I am demanding one! It just annoys the hell out of me!!

Tell them you want blood tests done - there is no medical reason for them to refuse.

And if you're really not that happy with them - vote with your feet, and go to another practice.

My own vet was amazed last year when I took one of my cats to the vet, saying that it was under the weather and had a temperature. They said the cat was fine. I insisted they took it's temperature - which yes, was very elavated.

How did I know?? Simple - I know my cats. Just as you know your dog!

Go to a different vets! I would still be with the same ones after they had screwed up last time to be honest

I saw 3 different vets from the same practice - had dog spayed, symptoms perisisted went back to vet, who was totally disinterested in examining dog and told me I was worrying about nothing, so took dog to another vet an hours drive away who took blood and urine samples and called me an hour later asking me to take her back in immediately to be put on a drip as she has a serious liver problem. Dog has cushings and liver problems but that was three years ago, very inconvenient having to drive so far to vets, but I know she is in good hands. You know your dog, be firm and insist they take your concerns seriously.

Demand to see another vet, if you are at all concerned you need a second opinion, its your dog struggling and most of us know our animals well enough to know when somethings wrong.

Had a similar problem a couple of years ago. I knew my dog was suffering and suspected a pyometria (sorry about spelling). the vet insisted she wasn't. I insisted he did further tests and was told "Oh we must operate immediately"!!!!!
keep pestering. After all you are paying them.

They might have training we have not but we know our animals best-ask to see a different ver and tell them you want the blood tests done.
There is no reason to refuse but if they do change vets.

IMO a vet should always take notice of an owners gut feeling. I am lucky that my vets always seem to take me seriously if I say there is something not right. I too have had a bitch with a closed pyometra and no obvious symptoms, other than not right. Luckily the vets agreed to run tests and after surgery she was fine. If your vets refuse to run blood tests I would change vets. Even if you have to travel further it is worth it for peace of mind. There are 4 practices nearer to me than the vets I use.

wow dats poor form on the vets part did they do a proper exam on him?u should definately demand better treatment for your pet!i cant tink of any reason why he wont take bloods just to be sure..id ask him again and if he refuse ask for a second opinion if nothing else he might learn to take a clients concerns more seriously..clearly you know your dog best!..

I lost an entire litter of puppies because my (ex)vet didn't take me seriously and unfortunately I was too inexperienced to argue with them. It was the most traumatic thing I have ever been through. INSIST that they do the blood test, you know your dog. Vets are human and make mistakes, it has to be a team effort to ensure the right things happen.
