Why would anyone do this?

Some of you will know there's a Facebook group set up to find Ellemoo's old mare Candy. The group's admin are myself and Ellemoo.

http://www.facebook.com/groups/355741137804422/

Well, both of us are receiving messages from people who claim to know where Candy is but who turn out to be lying. We have one lead which seems credible (although sad, as if true it woul mean Candy is dead :() but is still unconfirmed. But other leads seem just made up.

But why?

One young girl sent a very bizzarely-written message saying Candy had died in her barn in Texas. Quite why an aged mare from Dorset would end up in Texas wasn't explained, but her next few messages contradicted themselves and were even odder. I blocked her to make her stop.

There have been others too. I suppose they're attention-seekers and/or disturbed youngsters, but it's baffling why anyone would do this. I see on lost dogs' groups the same thing happens, they get hoaxes all the time.

I still think the Fb group is a good idea, as it does get Candy's details and Ellemoo's story out there. But these strange hoaxes aren't exactly what I was expecting...

Some people are SICK!

A horse or any pet being stolen is one of the most horrific things that can happen. I hope you find her. I cannot view the link, any pictures you can post on here would be great.

I looked on youtube a while back, there is a tribute to a 13yo girl who died riding her horse...amongst the well wishes there were SICK comments...makes me wonder what is wrong with people!

Sorry you've had to put up with these horrible individuals!

i had alot of that when I lost my kitten - had two phone calls saying my cat was dead. One even phoned to tell me they had eaten my cat - idiots.

Parker79, This is a picture of 'Candy' who we are trying to trace.

thats just horrible :( it sounds as if they're attention seeking or they think its funny!! good plan blocking them! i dont see how anyone could joke about that, im sure your distressed enough already without false leads and nasty jokes. good luck with finding your horse xxx :(

juts had a random flash of inspiration. Did Candy have a slight sway back at all? Just remembered that when i was looking to buy my first horse I went to view a palomino mare, and thinking about it i am sure she was called Candy, but this mare had quite a dipped back. Would only be able to give you the location is was that i went to but nothing more unfortunately.

PaintMeProud- what area was it you looked at this mare? Also when was it?
She did have fairly high withers etc where she was getting older...

It was November 2009 in Aldridge. I have found the sellers contact by searching through my old emails and can PM you if it will help

Cant believe I didnt think of it earlier.

We lost my daughters elderly yorkie x, she slipped her tether, in the worst possible weather, knee deep snow and bitterly cold, we managed through advertising to trace her movements through sightings, but couldn't actually find her, after two weeks surviving the weather, she was found in a garden shed, 12 miles from home, painfully thin and very glad to see us, there was tears all round when the dog warden brought her back, try telling your daughter you have lost her beloved dog.
Initally, we contacted the local radio, who wouldn't help because of the hoax calls these appeals generated, sick B******ds

It's worth following up, Paint Me Proud but one thing I've lately realised is that Candy seems to be a popular name for Palomino mares. In fact, in the 1970s I knew a palomino called Candy myself and have come across others through Google etc.

As I say, your lead is well worth following up though.

Unless.....

You're making it up for attention!:eek::D;)

That's awful. I've been following the story of local lost dog through Facebook. The family have done an amazing job of publicizing their search and the fb group is huge. But hoaxers regularly come on and try to hoodwink people.

The most disturbing was a couple who came forward with a dog almost identical to the missing one. They'd adopted it from an animal charity, said they loved it but also believed it was the one being looked for. They seemed to be doing a good thing by coming forward with it. However, the owners of the missing dog said it wasn't him.

The couple insisted it was, which was weird as obviously the owners would know their own dog. The couple posted stuff on the fb wall saying they had the dog, even after that. There is a large reward.

When it became obvious to them they couldn't pass the dog off and get the cash, they took him back to the animal charity and dumped him.

Sadly the email address doesn't work. :(

However, due to the power of Google I have another email address which seems to belong to the same people. They seem to have sold a few horses. Email sent. :)

Really hope you find her. Did you get any closer to discovering if she was in Dorset? I am near that area, can send out some emails.

In Dorset area a number of horses are sold on NFED (New forest equine directory). Lots of old adverts on there and you could post an advert with picture asking if anyone heard of her?

Okay, an update on the hoaxes on the fb group! The latest one, a young girl, came on in March asking was Candy the horse (her own she said) in her profile pic. A few questions showed the answer to be no (she lived in NZ anyway:rolleyes:). End of story.

Or was it.....?

Last week, same girl turns up and claims her friend Sally (in the UK) has sent her a pic of her mare, and she could see Candy's freezemark in the pic.

Wow, I said, please post the photo. Instead she says she'll send me the girl's phone number. Can't do it now, my phone's flat she says, will do it later.....

No phone number ever came, but after repeated requests, the girl gave me "Sally's" email. Of course, I emailed and asked about the mare. An answer came back, written in the same abrupt illiterate style as the original girl  but confirming she has Candy and will send photos. None came.

Several emails later, still no photos, no phone number....

Back I went to the fb group and asked the girl to post that photo, the one showing the freezemark. She doesn't have it, she said.

Then...

Hooray! Email arrived with photos! Except... wait a minute... three photos, all looking very American, none close up. So off I went to Google...

Yep. As I thought. Google image "palomino mare" and straight away two of those pics come up. One, a mare for sale in N Carolina, another a mare for sale dated 2002 in another part of America. Couldn't be bothered to find the third.

What a stupid, irritating waste of time. And what lengths that silly girl went to, even (presumably) opening an email account in a false name to hoodwink us.

I am at a loss to understand why she did all that.:confused:

kids are just kids arent they, they thinks it's all a big game and dont think about how it may upset people.

Did you have any luck from the lady seller I had contact with?

I emailed the address I got from Googling the address you sent (which didn't work) if you see what I mean. No answer so far. Ellemoo might try the phone number which comes up.

fingers crossed and I do apologies if it is nothing but seems every lead is worth looking into, you might just get lucky.

No apology needed. As you say, every lead is worth following. Even though that silly girl on fb was pretty clearly lying from the start, it was still worth following up just in case.

I wish I believed she'd have the grace to feel bad about it, but I expect it was her idea of a good time.

Am in Dorset if I can be of any help at all...which dealer was she sold to?

Also, someone has come forward to say they think the mare may have been owned by a member of the Poole District Pony Club. She remembers her from Pony Club events. Sadly if it is the same mare, the person thinks she died in a tragic accident.

Even if it turns out that sadly, this was Candy and she's now deceased, at least Ellemoo would know, and it sounds like until the accident the mare was loved and cared for, which would be some comfort.

The DC has come up with a possible name for the mare's owner, Lorna Feral, but it is only a possible one.

I have had dealing with Rempstone in the past...also know a few pony clubbers, not sure which branch but will ask her tomorrow if she knows of anything. Will see if I can dig anything up for you. :)

Brilliant. :)

My only involvement is I started the Facebook group for Ellemoo after I read her story on here and was touched. I'm in Lancashire though, so have no horsey connections down south. The more people spread the word in the Dorset area the better. The horsey world round where I live's like a big villlage, everybody knows everybody's business :o. If It's anything like that down there, someone will surely recognise Candy.

The freezemark LD52 should help. :)
