Why would someone do this?

Prepare for an overuse of angry faces.

I recently sold my Rambo Supreme rug on eBay.
Today I logged on to find a case open as the person wants a partial refund of £120 (the rug sold for £195) as the item isn't "as described".

I described the item to a tee
The rug was sold as a 6'6, they're claiming it's a 6'0 and ripped.

The rug was sold in immaculate condition. Cleaned and inspected before it was sold (looked all along the seams and it has no repairs) and I know for a fact it's a 6'6 as I bought it a few weeks ago but was a big too big for my lad - hence the sale. He wore it out in the field a few times.

I don't know where to go from here, I'm foaming at the mouth as the funds are on hold in my PayPal account. So not only can they possibly rob £120 from me but they get the keep the rug.

I would send a message back sayin that i will give a full refund and have rug returned or no refund at all.
Ebay should have a complaints thing maybe worth letting them no that's your plan. Obviously only give refund on arrival of rug.

Tell them to send it back and they can have a full refund otherwise they aren't getting anything! Sounds like they're just trying to get money out of you as well as a damn good rug :mad:

Awful, i would contact ebay. Not quite sure what you can do, but surely whoever bought rug cant do that?! :(

They've opened a returns case and are requesting a partial refund, I've not sold much on eBay but I feel disgusted buyers can request that.
eBay will be getting phoned tomorrow.

Did you photograph the rug before you sent it, including a photo of the label showing the size? What photos did you use for the listing? Did they show both sides, plus inside?

This sounds like a scam ! My hubbie is an ebay business seller, and these dreadful ****** try it on all the time, often threatening negative feedback in the message.

Get onto ebay staight away, OPEN A DISPUTE, and tell the buyer that they MUST RETURN the item, and in the meantime provide immediate photographs of the problem, and that you have opened a dispute with them. Further, tell them that their ebay account could be affected.

These scammers drive us up the wall and need dealing with. DO NOT OFFER A REFUND, it is up to the seller to return the item, even if you have to pay the postage.:mad::mad::mad:

I'm afraid that in these cases, you have to be very pro-active, and stay very strong.

Careful accepting returned rug and not getting a different one back.
You don't have to pay return postage either. It's the buyers responsibility although you'll probably have to refund original postage.

Unfortunately this is why I will buy expensive stuff but not sell on eBay. Far more covered as a buyer :(

Thank you, I replied to the case saying that the item is as described and I have photos the prove the rug isn't ripped and was sold as a 6'6.
This is the last thing I need right now, especially since I'm struggling for money as it just. Can just about afford a loaf of bread and a can of beans! Deflated isn't the word.

I have inside and outside photos of the rug, unfortunately not one of the label. I used approx 4 for the listing which shows the inside and outside, neck cover and the rug hung on the paddock gate.

This is why I hate eBay with a passion. Did you take photos of it before you sent it, including the label? That really is the only proof you can put forward. As they have opened a dispute you can only reply to that with what you have and hope eBay believes you. Do you still have the receipt? Definitely tell them to return the rug to you so you can inspect it tho.

I sold a lovely little Lovatt and Ricketts pony show saddle there, seller left feedback saying 'lovely saddle' three weeks later they sent me a message saying the stitching was knackered and the seat was coming away. I knew it wasn't and pointed out I had date stamped pictures to show it wasn't like it the day I posted it and they were happy enough when it arrived so they dropped it.
Sad to say there are some very dishonest people out there.

I don't blame you for being so angry! I sell on Ebay and it infuriates me how much protection buyers get, but sellers get none! I can't even leave negative feedback to buyers now, even ones who don't pay! Is ridiculous.

I agree with what others have said, give full refund if they return rug. Did you state a returns policy on the original listing?

Makes me so angry when I hear of these things happening. It is an obvious scam. They buy an item for a good price, then get a partial refund and sell it on at a massive profit. Alternatively, they may have an old ripped 6 foot rambo and are going to use photos of that as evidence against you. Ebay are so biased against sellers.

Yes it was stated in the listing that I don't accept returns.

My idea exactly, some people.

I even have photos of the inside and outside of the rug to prove it isn't ripped

good luck with that ;) I had a similar thing with a leather jacket and a dispute was opened by the buyer.

Told eBay I had photos to prove condition of item before I sent it and they said that they don't accept photos as 'evidence' as they can be photoshopped.

This is why I stopped using eBay to sell stuff (and buy unless I absolutely need to). eBay is just geared to protect the 'buyer' and there are some people out there who exploit this.

Buyer will be found in favour of by eBay and they will issue buyer with refund as requested. Won't matter two hoots what you say / do eBay won't listen.

Ah, that won't help either. I had T&Cs and eBay over ruled (to which I said what was the point in them telling buyers to put their T&Cs in the ad? They ignored me).

Tell buyer to return and you will give full refund. Cut your losses and hope that they haven't damaged the rug or as someone else has said, have a smaller rug with a rip and return that to you!

Good luck

This is from the mouth of hubbie;

You need to respond to the case in the following manner :

1) You do not agree the item is not as described.

2) The item was 6'6, and will be clearly stated in the label.

3) The photographs show that the rug was in excellent condition, with no rips (as suggested) prior to selling.

4) I am happy that the item is as described and will NOT be offering a partial refund.

Ebay will then make a decision based on this evidence. They will either side with the seller (no further problem and you keep all of the money), OR they will side with the buyer, in which case the buyer will have to return the item for a full refund.

The question of a partial refund is nothing to do with ebay - it it something that is MUTUALLY AGREED between the buyer and the seller - this is clearly NOT the case here.

It is then up to the buyer to accept this, or escalate the dispute to ebay to resolve. There are two outcomes - either ebay will side with the seller, no further action and seller keeps the money OR they side with the buyer, in which case the buyer must return the item tracked, and you give a full refund and resell.

I really hope this is helpful to you. This is what hubbie has had to do many times. pain in the ****.

TS xx

ps, under trading standards laws you HAVE to accept returns - even if you write this in the listing, it means nothing.

Perhaps worth going through PayPal too not just eBay.
Once sorted splash the account everywhere as a scam.

Can you report scams like this to police? Might be worth to see if they've got history as isn't just a couple of quid

That's really bad; why can't people see what they want, buy it if they can afford it and then leave it at that?! Another reason why I like horses more than people!

Why on earth would they accept a partial refund if the rug was (apparently) a 6'0 and they wanted a 6'6? A part refund wouldn't make a too small rug fit. Sounds dodgy. Hope you get it sorted.

E Bay is a farce, never again will I buy off that site.
From the posts on here neither buyer nor seller are protected.
I bought an item for 4k, wasn't impressed when I went to collect, but thought I had to buy, opened a case item not as described, have photos and
expert reports saying the thing was dangerous and a value put on it of 1k as a shell, E Bay not interested, never asked for photos or reports, now I will have to take this trader posing as a private seller to court, I wasn't even allowed to leave negative feedback.
Fully intend to phone E Bay again and tell them what I think of them

I too won't sell on eBay anymore, I sold an item as described and pictures showed- item sold for approx £10, buyer opened a case saying not as described, PayPal put instant freeze on funds in your account, then eBay found in there favour instantly the buyer got there refund- the bit that really annoyed me was they didn't have to return the item!!

So they got a full refund and kept the item which was Exactally as I had described it!!

I emailed eBay several times to complain and got no response.
