Just got back from doing horses, someone has stolen the bloody taps off of my cast iron bath I use for soaking hay!! Completely smashed in the top edge of the bath and taps gone. Why on earth would someone take taps??? They were gross!

More concerned that someone has been into the field and my yard more than the fact that the taps are gone, nothing has been moved, touched or taken other than that though. Oh, apart from the plug that was hooked around them, so now I cant even soak hay cos the water drains out grr!

OH is saying I should report to the police.....feel silly phoning up to tell them about taps that I dont actually care about, more the fact that someone has been trespassing.

I asked my OH about this as he works for the police (not a policeman, but manages a crime recording centre). He says that you shoudl report it because they need to know and can start to pay special attention to the area. It also helps crime pattern analysts to plan resources more effectively. Finally, and really don't want to worry you, but perhaps they were recce-ing the property for another 'visit'? It's gotta be worth a call if only to make you feel a bit better?

Thanks, did call it in so they have all the details. Mainly worried as someone has been in, and in case they come back.

The only other odd thing recently was my mare had her muzzle off in the field and it looked like it had been cut, which I also told them about. Probably not connected though.

Lucky they didn't take your bath too!

My dad is a bathroom fitter. Taps give him spare pennies, same as copper pipes, not that he would steal them.

A farm in my area was broken into earlier this year as a plumber was keeping lots of pipes, taps etc in one of the outbuildings. Farmer went out to investigate, was knocked unconscious by thief and I believe still in a coma...aaah!! And to think I thought I was safe living in the countryside! But yes prob scrap metal. People sure do stoop low.

The poor farmer up here - who is still in a coma after the theifs smacked him over the head - has taps etc stolen from his out buildings.

We used to have pipe stolen from the yard at work, adn the freight agents across the way from my work used to be hit repeatedly - now they all have locked CCTV covered yards.

I think its for scrap to melt it down, people make money out of doing this, the same goes for taking the wire out of pipes.

Just from another point of view if your muzzle was cut, maybe someone from a safety point of view removed them and the removed the muzzle through not understanding.

WishfulThinker - It is quite worrying! I am unashamedly addicted to Crimewatch and always think how safe it makes me feel that you never hear a word about Aberdeenshire...Glasgow at a push, but never here. Then something like that happens! Eeeek! But then I'm also annoyed I never have any info for them, or recognise any of the lovelies in Most Wanted, ha, I'm sad really :o:o

My first thought was perhaps for scrap metal, however it seems an awful lot of trouble to go too for two taps, particulary when there was a long metal support thing lying 5 metres away on top of my hay holding the tarpaulin down....

Just to add, in reply to Scally - the bath was located in an area of the yard that my horses do not have access to, and is used for soaking hay, NOT as a trough. So understand where you are coming from, but horses dont have access to it, and the horse concerned was in a field about 200 metres from the yard (and said bath) so no reason to remove a muzzle from a safety point of view, probably just someone interering.

it's high time the government insisted that scrap yards and dealers were only allowed to pay for items they buy via cheque or direct bank credit.

In one fell swoop that would help to prevent the ridiculous levels of thefts of road signs, drain covers, railway wiring, taps, batteries etc etc. Cause we all know the guys who do these thefts are not into paperwork and official trails of their cash.

Dont understand why it hasnt been done already.

Im in Aberdeenshire, normally its very quiet, except for that awful incident with that poor old gent. The people that did that should be thrown down a well.
