my large 3 yrold pushed and broke through his stable in the middle of the night last night, taking the side of stable out too!!!

now this chap is on a livery yard and has never ever done this before, he loves his stable 'ALOT' he was happiest on box rest for 10 weeks and never did this i dont think he got cast,,,,,, the only thing i can think is that YO brought a yearling back that evening and put in the paddok near the stables, but hes not bargy or pushy at all really dont get it!!! anyone??? Ideas????

Poor you....is your 3 year old OK!!!!! This is the most important thing,as for the stable I would say having a youngster near by has most likely upset him and he got worked up as he could not get to the other horse......the other horse could have been charging around.....My only concern here is will he go it another stable OK without any long term effects? You could offer an amount towards repair,if it is repairable maybe!!!! I know how you must be feeling,I would be gutted! If YO won't take anything towards the damage costs,then a nice pressie would be a gesture,maybe! However bear in mind that she did put her yearling near by, and it had a reaction to your boy!
 
he has a puncture wound to his flanks and i had the vet out last nite and is damages to the muscle lining, but no joints affected and no foreign body, i have incurred vets fees and now the damage to the stable in the first place, she thinks he got cast, but i feel is more likely to be the new horse!!!! will be fixing the stable with help from father inlaw (carpenter) so she wont be paying out ne thing n yet i feel mayb a gesture of some kind would be nice, she has been ok in the past and my livery is very cheap so cant really complain, is annoying when its not really your horses fault but its you and your horse that get lumbered with the cost and injury!!!!

the stables are wooden, and when he was coming round from sedation last nite he made a b line for his stable, so dont think any lasting effects, but ofcouse now hes done it once is he going to do it again!!!!! how can i keep him in it???????
 
Our old horse did this once years ago - we couldn't understand how he was out of the stable yet the door was still shut - until we walked up to door to see no back wall at all!

They are just 2 stables and one big wall and he's managed to knock the whole thing out! He hated being stabled though (he was supposed to be on box rest for a leg injury) and I was quite relieved that whoever constructed the stables hadn't maybe done the best job as otherwise I think he'd have killed himself trying to get out. We let him stay out to 'heal' his leg after that!!!

Sounds to me as if the stable wasn't really for for purpose. Is it old, flimsy, rotten? Glad your horse is not too shaken by it.
 
stables are about 6 years old and all wooden, i think that they were probably thrown together and not fixed very well, poor horse,
 
Firstly sounds like your horse has been quiet lucky with minimal injuries.

Its so hard though to know why your horse did it without having been there at the time. I obviously don't know your horses but IF it was caused by the youngster I would have expected the youngster to have been in a state in the morning and also its field to be absolutely trashed. End of day to set a horse off enough to go through its stable door its going to have to have been going totally off its head! I would have also expected any other horses on the yard (I'm presuming there are more here!!?!) to have been quite sweaty under their rugs that morning if the yearling had been going nuts nearby as that would stress most horses out.

I have had a couple of horses go through stables for various reasons. One of mine once tried to climb his stable door for no particular reason other than we were taking too long to turn him out. End result he ripped door and part of side off wall such was the force of him against the door, he won, although some muscle damage and grazes to show for it.

Another of mine went chest first through his stable door. To this day don't know why he did it, I was inside at night and heard the crash and went running to find horse in the middle of yard with half of his shoulder ripped open and the door in hanging off its industrial hinges and all the other ponies in their stables next door looking on in total calm and almost bemusement!

Now both stables were more than up for the job but still when faced with the power of a horse the wood broke which it is designed to do under pressure.

To be honest It sounds more than reasonable your horse got cast if he kicked out with his back legs to free himself several times that will cause damage and if you catch it at just the right place more than you will imagine!

Either way not a nice situation, have you discussed with your YO about your 3yo being potentially unhappy with the other youngster? Even if you won't agree on the cause of this incident maybe for your piece of mind you can put preventions in place if you thought it was your 3yo's reaction to the youngster.
 
Unfortunately with horses these things happen and I like the poster above have witnessed horses go through perfectly secure, safe stable doors.

I also feel people should not suggest that the stables were unfit for their purpose without seeing some photographic evidence.

I can't see how a horse being put in a paddock near the stables can be blamed for your horse going through the stable. Unless of course the paddock is right behind your stable and said horse was freaking out right behind your horse.

Hope your horse recovers from his injury. My horse implaled itself on a gate catch on the 30th Dec last year, had 4" of metal go into him and he's recovered fine, back to jumping 3'6 for fun and BDing. Oh and I was lucky as my vets bill was only £80, so no need to claim on my insurance as my excess is more than that, so your horse's injury must have been far worse than mine to make you have to claim
