WHy would you sell a horse like this??

because it sells quicker, people feel sorry for the horse and 'rescue' him... Or he is a totaly nightmare and having him underweight is the only way he is sane enough to sell.

Because;
a. You are an idiot and don't recognise very poor condition in an older horse, and are too cheap to buy him food
b. You are an idiot and haven't had his teeth done for an eternity
c. You are an idiot, and the horse has not been wormed for an eternity.
d. You are an idiot, and the horse has an underlying condition but you're too cheap to pay for the vet bills.
e. Other - unknown.

Take your pick. That horse is seriously, reportably, thin.

The person selling this horse obviously doesn't care less about it, and does not want to keep an ageing horse with possibly health issues that come with older age, does not care where it ends up or what happens to it even though it may have given them years of pleasure and loyal service. Makes me sick.

Shall we have a whip round and give him a nice new home, he can come and live with me and my 2 girls.

I was just thinking the same thing - he does look like a nice type. Bless him

I wasn't serious about buying him just being emotional.

My OH would seriously kill me!

Agree about reporting her though, even if there is an underlying health problem with the horse. She must not realise he looks so bad or she would've just used a head shot!

Meeee Mauuuu Meeee Mauuu where are the defammatory post police when you need them???

I posted on a confo critique of a horse and got hammered for commenting on someone else's horse for sale saying it was a defammatory post, surely saying this horse is under weight, may be insance, may be owned by any idiot are all rather defammatory...to quote what I got told 'How would you feel if you were thinking about buying the horse and read what everyone on here had to say'

rant over, on a serious note the horse could be a reason for the horse being under weight, we have a boy at our yard who's had problems with his digestive system when he was little and just doesn't eat enough to cover his ribs. The vet has said he is healthy and fit to be ridden, he just looks skinny

I'll report it if you like? I tend to normally be the one who reports/phones owners about there companion horses being sold as PC horses lol.

No seriously, unless anyone else wants to?

It is very thin and to be honest, if it had some digestive disorder the ad should be saying so.

I had a horse who looked that thin, the vets checked her and other than her age (22) there was nothign wrong, she was just an incredibly bad doer and even on 4 small hi cal meals a day she was still rather thin - BUT we did not ride her, she was then just a pet and she had had a hard life.

But to be that thin in summer - maybe he is a lot older than she is stating, that or he does have something wrong

True, I suppose she would have said something had there been a valid reason for him being so thin. During the winter his weight might be forgivable but with most people struggling to keep the weight off (including my skinny Arab who is rounded for the first time ever!) I don't see how she can struggle to get weight on unless he has something wrong with him.

There can be a lot of reasons.
The most obvious being not enough grass or supplementary food if that's the case.
It may have worms or worm damage.
It's teeth may need doing.
It may have had access to ragwort.
It may have a thickening of it's gut wall which means few nutrients are absorbed.
It does look as if it's got an ignorant owner who perhaps doesn't realise the horse looks dreadful.
At this time of the year unless something is a youngster and growing faster than you can get food into it most horses normally look good.
This horse needs vet attention before anything else. Only then can any new owner start to get him looking better. And horrible though it may sound, it may be cancer in which case there is only one solution.

Either way I believe that Horsemart have a responsibility to make sure advertisers submit appropriate adverts. By putting that advert live they are condoning ( whether intentionally or not) keeping horses in that condition.
I have emailed them voicing my concerns. That horse is not in a 'saleable' condition. To advertise it only encourages others to try and sell similar horses that need proper feeding, and veterinary attention- not advertising.

I thought I was the only one? Honestly I don't believe ANYONE could think that horse wasn't underweight, my non horsey friends who think horses eat meat and don't know the difference between a gelding and a mare still tell me my Tbs skinny, and my shetlands fat. From the sounds of the advert they don't sound that stupid, think of it this way why else would any one spend a touch under a grand on a low quailty, eldery horse which looks like the end is shamefully soon...

The member who suggested the horse could be alot older is likely to be very right.

I had a horse like that but he was more like 25 not 18, you would think they would put a reason for his weight if there was a valid one however the hes a git when weights on camp may well be right

She states at bottom need more time and work than she can give

You could see my horse's ribs last winter, he was on 4 kg of conditioning feed a day, adlib hay, the works. This summer he looked pregnant! I can't imagine what little they've been feeding him (in any) to gt him into that state when there's so much lush grass around at the mo.
