Why your breed appealed to you?

I got pursued across Hyde Park once by a nice and vair posh lady with two schips who wanted to come and say hello. I also chased down two myself at KCI last year, only to find that they were German visitors and initially understood maybe half of what I’d blurted at them in my excitement 😂

With people who don’t know what they are the conversation usually goes:

“What is he?”
“A schipperke.”
“Oh, what is that crossed with?”
“…another schipperke…”

no dog hair in the bed!😂 my perfect sized poodle😁 if i could i would have 10 of him, he’s the easiest boy ever and was the easiest puppy, such a clever clogs and bags of personality in the cutest fluffy package!

he’s definitely the typical “bought by a girl in her 20’s” dog don’t get me wrong, but he is very well trained and very well behaved🤣

he’s 3, and from day 1 i think there’s only been maybe 4 people that have guessed he’s a poodle - everyone always thinks cockapoo, cavapoo, i once got cavapoochon before poodle! i know he doesn’t have the poodle haircut but really?🙈

He's lovely @dottylottie

If I can't have a gundog next time I definitely fancy something small and fluffy 😂 (though it will be a long while away as Fodhla and I have discussed it and she's going to live to be 20).
i would really love a cocker spaniel next! OH’s favourite breed, and rory’s favourite to play with at the park😂 no desire to go shooting but i’d love to do some gun dog training, and i’d like to get into agility - i took rory to a dog field that had proper equipment yesterday and he loved it, but i don’t think he’s quite got the drive to do it properly😂

Irish terrier owners are notorious for screeching to a halt/reversing/leaping out of vehicles etc to chat with another Irish!

I'm often asked if mine is a little Airedale but the IT lovers and owners greet each other with the cry 'An Irish!' which always makes me smile. I get similar responses from the owners of other Irish breeds too: the Wolfhound, Kerry Blue, Soft coated Wheaten, the setters, the Kerry Beagles (very, very rarely seen) and the Glen of Imaals. It's definitely a club 🤣

It’s the enthusiastic owner community (alongside the fact I think they are the most handsome breed) that makes me want an IT. Everybody seems to say they’re the best dog they’ve ever had with such enthusiasm.

I’m still unsure why I don’t have one and have two other breeds instead tbh. They’ve been top of the list since before these two!

There's definitely more breeds I like than dislike, growing up we had a heinze 57 ( with a fair bit of whippet in her) and a German shepherd. When I was finally in a position to get my own as an adult I wanted a German shepherd or a rottie, OH was OK with either of these but really wanted a husky ( purely for looks lol), talked him out of that as we couldn't keep up with one, then he saw a picture of a malamute puppy and there was no other options allowed. We've had malamutes now for 15 years and turns out we quite suit each other, they are friendly but independent and I really couldn't deal with a clingy dog, they can be quite flexible around exercise needs so adapt well to changes in plans and look absolutely gorgeous. I would love a spitz or a bernese too.

My first dog as an adult, I got from the RSPCA. In those days, you could walk around the kennels. I went in with the intention of getting a big dog like a German Shepherd or Rottweiler. I took one look a Jessie and we just clicked. She was a Jack Russell cross. 10 minutes later we were on the way home🐶

Nobody told me how much Jack Russells moulted😊

I think I told you about the time I stopped a couple in Brum with Schip and they were at once pleased and also thought I was insane. I think they may have been German.

A show person thought my grey WL GSD was crossed with a pitbull (he did have an exceedingly large head) and to lots of people in breed circles, the black one was a Groenendael until he was about three, and a collie cross to pet people for his entire life, with anyone who asked 'are you sure he's not a cross?' being regaled with the details of the five generations of the dogs behind him. Do not question a geek.

The IT owner community are generally lovely in my experience! I had loads of advice (good) when looking for a pup. I've had lots of dogs but I cannot imagine going forward without an Irish now - I don't really understand why they are not more popular. My lad really is the dearest, funniest most devoted person.

If he enjoys it, it doesn't matter about lack of drive. Ideal dog to learn agility with and they often speed up later. High drive dogs can be very hard work, helps to already have experience before attempting to work one. I do speak from experience.

Trying to have a high drive dog do agility is why I drink 🥴

A person who gives tickets in malis was all 'lovely mali, I thought you said you were getting a GSD?' when I brought V home.

I'm not sure labradors ever appealed to me  I wanted a dog, thinking terrier type, little dogs appeal to me! Mr P went all out with how labs are the best ever family dogs and terriers would be awful with children so persuaded me that one would be best. Just so happened a friend of his had a last of the litter and so guess what.... In all fairness he was the most amazing dog and grew up with our daughter from babies. So i guess it was him that made me like them. I still very much only like some labs though, definitely not a blanket fan!!

Jackhuahua's on the other hand.... whats not to love 🤣🤣

disclaimer I use the term jackhuahua in a jesting way, I actually call him a x breed or just a terrorist.

Hmmm, well I can emphasise with the story, having sables myself, but somewhat horrified by a ch show judge who can't tell the difference between a Mali and a Shepherd!!
Although after recent experiences with judges, sadly not at all surprised!
Mind you back when I had Belgians, they were still all one breed. My terv was terv x malinois!

I think in Belgium they are still regarded as one breed.

To be fair to the judge there is so much variation in Malinois, there is also a lot of interbreeding with Dutch Herders in some circles (and some people consider Mals and Herders to be the same breed), and now with the RSV 2000 breeders using some very interesting looking 'German Shepherds', I really struggle sometimes with some of the finer built dogs to identify what they actually are.

Wanted a medium sized, medium energy healthy breed with no da or ha to worry about, that I could breed from and enjoy dabbling in pedigree dog stuff - Finnish lapphunds fit the bill and are very enjoyable.

The oodles are much more controversial and I know people judge more for me having them....but I wanted to have a puppy from my brothers labrador but didn't fancy living that level of shedding again. I had her for a year for him then she went back home . So hip checked her and bred her to a standard poodle and kept a puppy from her litter.

Regret nothing, got a fantastic girl from the pairing who I would clone if I could. Have bred and kept a daughter from her as well.
Incidentally ended up keeping a shedding puppy, because loved the personality more then I worried about the shedding in the end. But having lived with both...my flatcoat puppy sheds dramatically less then a lab. Plus I sized down in that litter. So I got my retriever type dog in a medium size.

Hips, elbows, patella's DNA etc all done with 0 issues and excellent scores before anyone asks.

But very very different types of dogs 😅The oodles are much easier to teach recall to and much lower prey drive. They bark a lot less then the lappies. The lappies have a lot more sass but are so much fun to deal with and enjoyable to train (apart from recall) Similar energy levels.

The lapphunds get a hugh amount of attention when out and about though - that can be a mixed blessing when I'm not feeling very social and just want to exercise the dogs.

I grew up with a Labrador and then a toy poodle followed by a miniature. However when I had a bad time in my life, my dad bought me a JRT puppy much to mum’s annoyance as she was finally dog free! I took him to puppy classes and had such a bond with him that dad then got himself a JRT from a rescue. From then on I have loved terriers. Years later I then inherited dad’s Border x JRT who was such a character and I now have a Lakeland x Border, again such a character who makes us laugh every day. So yes I’d say I’m stuck on terriers. I’d like a Welsh terrier next but who knows what’s around the corner.

I didn't really know about Lapphunds when I got Liberty, but they're her breeders second breed, so I asked to meet them. They're cute but very fluffy! Her breading male looked like he would have been happy to come home with me and was actually very quiet compared to the Aussie madness! I wouldn't say no to one in the future.

I love Collies. One day I will have one from a pup and actually do proper Collie things with him or her. We are on our third now, all were rehomes. Aled was 10 when we got him, lost him at 12. Ellie was around 11, she was PTS at almost 13.

Bo, who is my best friend, we got at about 4. He was a failed worker who had been locked in a kennel for the 2 years or so before we got him. He’s 10 now.

How we ended up with 3 sibes, I don’t know. One a rescue picked up at 10, he’ll be 13 next year. One picked up as a stray aged around 7, which makes him 11 next year, and Luna who we’ve had as a pup who has recently turned 8.

Who doesn’t love hair EVERYWHERE?

I met a Bernese Mountain Dog at a hotel in Switzerland when I was 16 and fell in love. The dog laid in the entrance like a bear and greeted all guests gently.
Due to moving around the world as a child we couldn't have animals bar hamsters and goldfish.
The first thing I did when I left home was buy a BMD and went on to have 5. Problem is they are quite short lived. Also had a BC from a local farm who was brilliant.
Mr NN always wanted a flatcoat so got one and then quickly another. Both died of cancer. One at 6 and his half brother was 4. We decided against another one.
Friend had a litter of springers and went to meet them. Of course ended up with one. He's amazing and loves our outdoor lifestyle and agility.
I will get another BMD in my dotage but probably from abroad as they are too inbred here.

it's a shame, but here in Switzerland, we have a very nice and very big male Bernese at the Rescue Center, named Wolf !
He is so nice but hard to adopt as people want small dogs...

Too far and complicated to adopt him from abroad, i guess.

Did you know that Bernese have the reputation of letting people in but not out ? They guard the exit ?

Our dog César would let anyone in the house, but once he terrified someone, not letting him out, just lying in front of the door was enough ! They are very impressive just lying down !

Hope Wolf finds a lovely home. Whereabouts is rescue?

I didn’t have much choice, i was determined to get a grown up rescue so if you don’t want a staffie or a lurcher you’re pretty limited! I went with the lurcher and he’s wonderful! Although he has been far from easy and I think many others would have struggled as he has terrible SA, he was VERY dog aggressive, had quite sensitive digestion and zero recall, but we bonded and love each other. Unfortunately, he’s in his twilight years now and i find this period so hard, i love old dogs but not the heartache they bring

It's in the SVPA, société vaudoise de protection des animaux in St Catherine, it's near Lausanne.

They have a good website but don't post photos of the dogs, they want people to go there in person.
If he is still there next time, i go, i will get you a picture.

Hopefully, he will be gone, the holidays are over and people start looking for dogs again.

Thanks. I have friends who lost their BMD in who are near Bordeaux in France. Will give them rescues details. My friend has had 4 BMDs and used to work with the Californian rescue.
