I am more of a lurker than a poster as I admit I am a novice horse owner.

However, I know in this occasion I am right!

We have a new livery on the yard with a pony she bought 3 weeks ago. This is the lady's first pony) On Friday it came in crippled. A more experienced livery looked at the pony and said it was laminitis and to keep it in all weekend. He gave her 3 sachets of bute to tie her over the weekend and told her to call the vet for more on Monday if she needed it. I saw the lady yesterday and the pony is still really lame. I told her if he was mine Id have called the vet out out on Friday, but that's just what I would do.

She has just put on our yard Facebook group that she is after more sachets of bute if anyone has any. I replied I didn't but really think she should call the vet if the pony is still lame 4 days later. My message has been ignored and another person said she has a few she can have so she wont need the vet until the end of this week, by which time the pony should be fine.

I know it is none of my business, but my friend had a cushings pony that was very lami prone, and even with all their experience of the lami they always called the vet as soon as they noticed the signs. Is it me that is over reacting? I just cant bare to see this pony in pain because a few novices with no experience of lami think its OK to self treat it and have no idea how to prevent it. I am not the type for confrontation so have PM'd the lady in question with my concerns but as yet to get a reply.

Why cant people see how serious laminitis is and that it needs to be treated as an emergency, not a "holiday" for the pony as it is currently being called.

Your right the pony needs a vet, can you not go to the yard owner and get them to tell the woman she must get a vet, its not helping with the other liveries giving her bute either, I dont like confrontation either but I would have to say something to her.

You are right that poor pony needs a vet ASAP. :(
I'm very expereanced with Lami and normaly deal with the very early signs myself but if any pony showed signes of full blown lami I would call the vet streight away. Xrays may be needed. People just don't realise how serious laminitas is.
I wish Lucy had had her first attack in the days of camera phones. Taking 45mins to walk a pony 100yards from field to stable is no laughing matter. :'(
What does your yard owner think of the other liverys self treating?

I agree you're right to be concerned and I don't think you are over-reacting, but you're also right when you say it's none of your business. These situations are always difficult. Do you have a pro-active YO you can involve? Maybe they can have a word with the owner. Or perhaps the more experienced livery who gave her the bute in the first place could talk to her again. Clearly this pony needs proper diagnosis of its lameness and the correct treatment. Good luck.

YOs cannot diagnose despite how experienced many may be. A vet is needed in the first instance and bute shouldn't be given without diagnosis and prescription. I hope diet and hoof support is being addressed as well as just giving bute.
