Whys is it the fashion today to bred a coloured horse?

"i could never own a bay and think it was special...they're just too common lol."

i personally think that bay is the classiest colour! I would rather own a bay than a coloured, but this is coming from someone who owns a grey, a blanket appy, a chestnut and a wierd roany thing xp (my family's horses, but i ride them all and seem to be the one who does everybody's mucking out...) and i'm looking phoning tonight about another appy for sale, so fingers crossed, he may be lovely and then i'll have two spotty botts!

love bays!! I have 3 and they are all very different, but gorgeous with it!! They are the easiest colour to keep looking clean - they always look gleaming even if they have been rolling in the mud (or dust at the moment!!) one has no white whatsoever and is very classy looking, 2nd one is grandson of sadlers wells and has his white face and 4 white socks so very flashy (a bit orange so almost looks chestnut) and 3rd one has no white except one very small socklet. The 2 dark bays have dapples on their bums and look so healthy even though i am not the best at grooming and the orange one has almost a metallic sheen to his coat (no he's not an al tehek!!!) there maybe a lot of bays about but they really are stunning. Love greys but they are a nightmare to keep clean and you can never get a shine on their coats.

Get off of my case i'm far from a sore loser and have done very well with my coloured - if you don't like what I say don't answer my posts, if you decide to put an opinion on here you should be prepared to have it replied to, now sod off.

Hang on a minute...You got offended by my original post and commented on it, i defended my comment (which you didn't bother to read) and went on to moan about comments people had made about coloured horses (aimed mainly at me due to the judging comment) so i repeated my last post which again i think you only picked out the parts which seemed to offend you in some way?

Nobody has else has been offended by my or other peoples comments about coloured horses...only you?

As in your own words above..."if you don't like what I say don't answer my posts, if you decide to put an opinion on here you should be prepared to have it replied to"

Kettle Pot and Black are some of the words that come to mind...Can't take the comments or peoples replies to your comments then don't post.

As for telling me to "Sod Off" you vile person...I have as much right to comment on these forums as you, without the chip on my shoulder.

Go and groom a white bit on your horse and leave the conversations to the adults.

I think colours do come and go in fashion.

25 years ago when I was a teenager - no-one except the gypsies would have a coloured horse! Now they are so so popular.

Back then palomino or chestnut with a flaxen mane and tail was the 'in fashion' colour.

You must be exactly the same age as me - as I was about to say exactly the same.

I grew up in Doncaster and you could have bought a coloured for £50 back then they were so unpopular!

And I would have dies for a palamino back then too - I don;t see them much anymore (apart from breeds like haffies)

I don't mind a nicely marked coloured, but I reeeeeally dislike spotted horses. It's a bit of a running joke with my friends, but I just think they are all incredibly fugly! :o

I think spotted horses are really cute when they are foals but to be honest, i can't remember the last time i saw one...Maybe they will be the new fashion and everyone will be rushing to bred one...then where will all the coloured horses be?

Maybe the spot is the new black (or coloured!!!) Where's Gok when you need him, he'd tell you what colour is in fashion at the mo!!! :D

I'm sure there's a bonkers gene running through many of todays coloureds. They have got too popular too quickly for their own good and the place is awash with them.

I'd have (another) one but it would have to be as equally talented as marked and as little white on as possible. I particularly object to 'shark' eyes (small iris with white surround) - in any horse, but they seem prevalent in coloureds.

My main gripe with coloureds is that some people (not all!) breed them purely just thinking about the colour and not the conformation or other characteristics eg they will put their mare in foal to a coloured just to get a coloured foal. I think colour is really the least important thing when it comes to breeding a quality horse!

When it comes to unusual colours I would prefer a really striking golden dun or an unusual grey (rose grey, very dappled or iron grey) to coloureds or spotteds. I do own a coloured lemon/white miniature pony though but she is very unusual compared with your normal coloured. She looks almost pink and white at the moment!

there are far far too many being bred, and ending up living in fields in huge herds up here. I can only think that while they are in fashion, they are being cashed in on. It's so sad, far too few homes for these gorgeous ponies.

I have a spotty and I don't think he is fugley at all!! He isn't to everyones taste admittedly. I don't worry about what colour a horse is its the confirmation and way they move etc that draws my eye although I do like a nice grey. I never went looking for a spotty I just bought him cos I liked him. Like a few people have said I do worry about all these coloured being bred there are huge fields by us just full of them and they are clearly just being mass produced to cater for a market. Someone at work even came and asked me what it was all about the other day as her boyfriend had told her they were clearly being bred for meat!

Obviously otherwise you wouldn't have got on your high horse over a comment...try reading posts and absorbing them before you jump off at the deep end.
Just another narrow minded comment at someones else's post...oh well, you live and learn.

!

So pleased you said "Not all":) I breed Paints and Quarter Horses and I have to say that when the colour works out then it IS an added bonus. That palomino colt IS actually a Paint but he could have been a solid chestnut and it wouldn't take anything away from the fact that he is an excellent example of his breed (not a particularly common one in the UK - yet) Except, that his market value would be about $1000 less purely because people WANT flash.

Colours come, colours go, I prefer overos to tobianos anyday, and that is because I like the pattern better, no other reason at all. At the end of the day, having a lot of white, or blue eyes, or anything else, isn't going to make them jump an inch higher or have any more guts, ability or endurance than the solid bay/chestnut/black. It is all down to personal preference.

Well said...personal preference is the key...It would be boring if we all like the same colour and we should be allowed to like different colours without people getting defensive. It's your choice.
The colour of your horse doesn't make it better than anyone elses or make your horse have any more ability it's just a colour of a coat.
