Hello, Once upon a time I saw a wicker bucket type saddle used for "teaching" very young children ( more like getting them used to the motion of being on a pony ). I've been searching on Ebay and other sites but can't locate any. Do they not exist anymore or was it always a figment of my imagination?
Since I am now a proud grandma I would love to be able to use one for my grandson.
Anybody got any ideas?
Thanks!

i dont know where abouts you are in the country but Sandon Saddlery had two in last time i checked :)

Wow, that's a quick response!
Do you mean Sandon, Hertfordshire?
I'm in France at the moment but would be quite happy to have one shipped out to me.
I'll try and google Sandon and find a website.
Thanks!!

Yep sandon in herts. I dont think they have a website. Its a really old place that stocks EVERYTHING. worth giving them a ring though :)

You're right, they haven't got a website, but will give them a ring to compare price with the other suggestion.
Thanks again!!

I remember those - they were like an enclosed whicker chair that sat on the pony. The child was strapped in. Many people now consider them to be dangerous - purely because the child is strapped in. Should the pony fall or bolt it is impossible to get the child off fast.

Safer to hav a toddler size saddle with a handle and hold the child if too young to sit there safely alone.

I know what you mean about table tops ;) however, in a basket saddle, the child is merely sitting as if in a chair, on a felt pad (or leather saddle) they are 'riding' properly, or at least sitting astride.
Unless the child has a dislocating hip problem (can be found on the under 1's) then the felt pad without leather is fine as it is not slippy. They - the child - don't tend to slip - and you would be walking close beside the child anyway.
Pony needs to be trained to walk with you at its shoulder when you are taking the really teeny ones on board but you prob know that, gran ;)

I was given the use of a basket saddle for my sprog when she was tiny, but having tried it once it wasn't really 'riding', I then used the felt pad we had from eons ago. Got the saddler to re-felt & girth it when sprog got to about 2 & a half as she was coming out beside me on her shettie (as wide as it was tall I think! :o ) when I was riding a quiet one round the block.
She even did a sponsored ride being led off a 14hh I had at the time when she was 3, tho we did do the short route of 5 miles & I was squeeked at to 'go faster mummy' much of the way :D

Good luck in whatever you choose :)

Thinking about it and having looked at the wickerbaskets pictures again, I think I might go with what I've already got. The kiddies do seem to be perched on top a bit with the basket ones, and as was said, if they're strapped in they'll be difficult to "safe" should anything happen.
Thanks for all the advice, if I ever learn how to put a picture on here I might even put a progress one on here....
