wide or narrow girths?

Mainly out of interest I have been reading a bit through previous threads, and general consensus is that the wider the girth the better.

Now I have always thought the same thing - but my mare is doing my head in with girths!

I had a nice wide (4" approx) old dressage girth I was using on her - it was a straight one - but went out even wider at the ends and was rubbing her. At least that was what I though was rubbing her!!

I then ordered a nice, but not too expensive wavy shaped leather girth - but while I was waiting for it to be delivered, ended up getting a cheapy Aerbon dressage girth (the bog standard ones - like this but without the elastic:

She was fine in the aerborn girth - which seems a lot narrower than most other girths.

Now my "nice"new girth has arrived - looks lovely - nice and padded - perfecto me thinks - bloody thing rubs her to hell!

Now I'm thinking that she is a funny shape and is better with the narrower girth.

Has anyone else found this?

Also - I looked at the stubben string girths before - but I am a bit worried about buying one, as they are also quite wide, and if it is the width of the girth that is the problem, I don't want to end up with *another* girth lying around that I can't use - I already have about a million

wider is better because it spreads the pressure more. Having said that shape and material are also considerations as they must suit the horse too
 
I think that's what I was thinking with this nice wavy shape girth - there was me thinking it's a nice width, and nice and padded, a little elastic on both sides - perfect. And it does not agree with my poor girl at all.

I guess when her poor bally has got better I will try a stubben string girth and see how that works out. She is a bit of a funny shape bless her!

The trouble with the wavy girths is they have to be the exact size for the horse and the wavy bits need to be in all the right places or they will restrict and rub.
 
didn't get on with wavy either, and all the bits looked to be in same place as agreed by the people it went back too, with evidence of the hole it created in situ. My boys conf means his girth groove is quite far forward so thick girths just don't suit him but I also hoped that the wavy girth would cover both bases ie be thicker (he has a couple of pressure spots from his leather atherston) but mind his elbows. I am currently using a thorogood dressage with elastic both ends (which sits well as he has point and balance straps on drsg saddle) and an aerborn waffle atherstone on his gp with elastic both ends. I have just been brave enough to remove the nuumed sleeve from this one and so far it is ok so sticking with the cheap ones for the mo.
 
Can thoroughly recommend the Stubben Trevira string girths, lovely and wide so spread the pressure and they are also lovely and soft to the touch, I hope they suit your lovely mare.
