I got a Stubben headcollar for my birthday and although Im going to keep it for best I thought I'd use it a bit to get the 'newness' out of it. Went to catch my horse the other day and as I went to put it over his nose he snorted and ran off and wouldnt let me near him until I'd put it down. I did manage to get it on him with a bit of persuasion and he was fine. Ive since used my old nylon one and hes been fine. Tonight thought I'd use the new one again and he did the same, ran off and would let me near him whilst I had it in my hand, he kept circling me but was scared.
He is a spooky horse but this seems daft. Hes fine with his leather bridle and my last leather headcollar which was a cheaper one but also new.
Why do you think hes doing this. I realise it must smell different but leathers leather isnt it?

i had that with my horse. i had to clean it with saddle soap and oil to remove the really strong smell of new leather!! hope that helps

Thanks, I have cleaned it but it does smell very leathery so I'll do it again. I wondered what animal the leather was from. Sounds awful I know and probably stupid but is there any chance it could be from a horse? and if so would a horse realise this?

I shouldn't think it is horse-leather, and even if it was I doubt whether your boy would be able to tell. Has it got a nice shiney brass name-plate on it? If so, perhaps he catches sight of it glistening.

Only other thing to do is drag it through the muck-heap a couple of times, which should do the trick but is not the sort of thing you would normally do with a lovely Stubben head-collar!!

Can't think of anything else, sorry.

My friend's ex-racer TB was totally freaked out when she had an opened tin of cat food in her hand. Always wondered if the horse could smell any of her less fortunate friends in there?
