Colt foal born end march - cant get firkin near it - I am insiting on putting a leather foal slip on and off for turn out each day just so we handle him.

Mum has super temp so dont know whats going on here!!!

This morning hes doing little bucks at me while im trying to get him - handling him gently and not scarily so we dont put him off us and when we get him hes very tight and we are rubbing our hands on him to get him used to contact. He looks like he is going to explode.

Doesnt seem aggressive - no ears flat back just doesnt want anything to do with us at all?

Any ideas what to do?

Foals are skittish - just handle him daily, patiently and consistently.

He doesn't need a foal slip on just a guiding hand on his bumb and chest.

Lots and lots of patience & time and be consistent with him.

He will come round.

If you have time sit in the field/stable with him just reading a book and his natural curiosity will get the better of him!

Good Luck

As Holly831 ^^^

The 3 year old wouldn't have anything to do with people for months when she was first born. I'd bring her in at night with Mum and twice a day, patiently and consistently, would catch her and run my hands everywhere and work with her. You can't get rid of her now, she's a right PITA because whatever you're doing, she's got to be in the middle of it

Echo the above sentiments!!

My colt foal last year was nervous as anything for the first couple of weeks, but was just very calm and quiet with him. Spent a lot of time sat with a book in the corner of the stable and curiosity eventually gor the better of him :-) Watch yourself though, as I was totally engrossed in the book and didn't notice him creeping up on me until a front foot hit my arm!!

He's totally into everything now, but still has a nervy streak when you do something new - just needs confident and calm handling and he's ace!

Good luck with yours - he will get better!
