Wilkie snaffles

Does anyone use one? Just bought a British Riding Pony and she came with a single jointed wilkie and cavesson on her bridle. She has a soft mouth but throws her head a lot when you ask her to slow down and I'm thinking the single joint may be hitting the roof of her mouth as she has a very small Araby type head with a tiny muzzle. Perhaps the french link wilkie would be better? She also seems to open her mouth quite a lot as an evasion so perhaps a different noseband? Don't want to go chucking loads of stuff on her but I rode her tonight and can see why my daughter got a bit un-nerved by her throwing her head up and back in canter.

i use a wilkie snaffle with a french link on mickey and he goes in it better that he does with anything else. when i bought him he was in a dutch gag and he had cuts on his mouth so put him in a plain snaffle for a while with vet wrap on it until they healed i then put him in a french link but as i started schooling him he wouldnt go on the bit then got him the wilkie snaffle and he will go on the bit in a fashon but he doesnt particuarly like being schooled anyway.

We used one on my daughters first ridden show pony and didn't have any problems. They're good bits for kids as the poll pressure helps bring the pony's head down but at the end of the day if it doesn't suit the pony then it might need changing.

Try putting in a french link or lozenged bit first before strapping her nose up with a flash. She could be doing this because of the bit bashing into the roof of her mouth.

Give her the benefit of doubt and see how she gets on

When were her teeth last checked?
