I bought George in November 2002 from a woman who owned a 3 stable yard. She had G there as a livery with a person who had him on loan, as his owner had a back injury. The loaner of the horse didn't pay the livery and his owner couldn't afford to stump up, so the yard owner sold him to recoup her losses.
When we bought G we were able to contact his previous owner briefly, but then she moved house. She was really sad that G had been sold as she'd done jumping with him and he'd been her horse of a lifetime apparently. Needless to say that he'd been badly treated by this yard owner, kept in his stable 24/7 and had just really lost trust in people. He had had great schooling and you could still see that, but he really lacked suppleness and his fitness was attrocious. We worked on this.
In the advert it said he was 8 years old. On his farmkey certificate it said he was freezemarked in December 1993, so clearly in November 2002, he was actually 9, nearly 10 (they SHOULD be a yearling before they can be freezemarked). However, Sparkle was marked by us when she was 4 so it's possible he was older than 1 when he was marked and, as such, I have always been unclear of his age. Also, when he was vetted the vet told us he was aged which just means 9+ in age.
Apparently he had papers but these were lost somewhere between his first owner and the owner before me (he has had 3 including me). I got his passport in about 2003/4 whe it became legal. The only thing I have that MAY give me an indicator to his true age is maybe his freezemark. I have always pondered it but something in me wonders whether they have his year of foaling on record, by some small chance. They'd obviously have his basic details on file. I suppose if he was marked later then they may not have his date of foaling.... but is it worth a shot? Has anyone found out information like this from farmkey? It's all I have and I really want to know his proper age. The best I have is that, going by his freezemark, he was 15 in December...
