I am due to marry my Australian Fiance next month and we have decided that since he has spend two years in the UK and hates it, we will live back in Australia (visa permitting for me)

We met there when i was travelling 4 years ago.

Now i do love Australia and really want my OH to be closer to his family as two of his sisters have just had babies and he is missing seing younger siblings grow up.

However, i have had a dream to own a dutch draft or ardenne for a long time now. I am totally in love with both breeds :D Shortly before getting engaged i was in contact with a few breeders out in belgium but with the expense of a wedding and now emigration my 'dream' came to a immediate halt albeit for very good reasons!

I am just a bit sad at the thought of my long term dream never becoming a reality! So come on HHO how can i get a very large and heavy horse from belgium to Australia without robbing a bank

Sorry for the moan but my none horse friends just laugh and say that i am going to live in paradise what have i got to moan about!

How about researching for breeders in Australia? your dream horse could already be there waiting for you :-)

Apparently there is one stallion in Australia owned by a guy called Ross Carbery and thats all i have ever found. Maybe there is a market here...if only i could move belgium closer or America they have a lot of draft breeds there!

Get quotes from International Shippers. The cost may not be as prohibitive as you think.

Here you are. join this forum and find out if those breeds ARE over there :)

Think about what you like about these breeds and see if there is an Australian equivalent. Why spend a fortune transporting a horse over there when there might be something just as nice already waiting for you.

I would also add that these european draughts are used to a different climate and probably food and might not be so happy in Australia especially if they grow a thick coat and it is very hot.

Maybe you will have to give up your dream of a specfific breed of horse but that does not mean that you can't get a great horse. Maybe you did not dream of falling in love with an Australian man but that seems to have gone well so why not be open minded about a horse?

There is an Australian draught horse perhaps you might like them.

Congratuations it will be a big adventure, sometimes you just need to change your dream a little or sleep on it for a while, good luck with it all.
