This is my 5 year old ID X Arab. He was 15.1 but in the last week seems to have shot up in front  - he is also eating like a piggy and has got a bit bigger across his chest (i don't think he is too heavy though). His mum was 15.2 and dad 16.1.

Will he go up any more?

He covered mares as a 2 year old (not when I had him and could it have stunted his growth?)

He could theoretically grow a bit more, but he does look quite "finished" in those pics. Covering won't have stunted his growth, but stallions have been proven to stop growing sooner and be marginally smaller than geldings - think it's something to do with the effect of testosterone on growth plates. If he was gelded before three then that shouldn't effect his adult height.

*trundles in and unceremoniously elbows OP out the way*

can I partially hi jack this thread to ask the same of my boy... he is 15.2 3 1/2 yrs old but hasn't grown in the last 12 months... he looks like this... (well hes a bit more fluffy at the moment)

Oh and his withers aren't quite that prominent... some of it is mane :D

*whispers* sorry op:o and your baby is beautiful:D

Horses are not finished growing until they are 7, even 8, although most don't grow upwards much after about 6. But it's like people, they don't all grow at exactly the same rate - I was my adult height at 13.:)

So, short answer, it's quite possible he has grown. Breeding a couple of mares if he is otherwise well fed etc will not have stunted him.

See i dont want him to grow too big for a small hunter....cos hell be too small for a lightweight :-)

Mines 5 n still growing, sure yours will have some more too

yeah, Im sure he will, its just that he levelled out so soon, he was a proper see saw to begin with then nothing... for a whole 12 months:rolleyes: To me he will be perfect whatever height he finishes at, but Id like another inch or 2

Queen bee- he may grow another inch or so but some horses do finish maturing very early. Your horse does look very mature for a 3year old.

Av- my 5 year old is still growing. He has just gone a titchy bit bum high again. He has grown so slowly since I got him at 2. He was about 14.1hh back then and now he is 15hh. I would of loved it if he made 15.1/ 15.2 but I'm not holding my breath. Luckily he is very wide so I look alright on him.

Well my cob is still growing/filling out at an alraming rate - she's 5 in may.

3yr old (just)........first time sat aboard (14.3hh) but not filled out!

I was concerned as i thought she may not make the height i wanted, but as you can see she more than takes up the leg!! am 5ft10.

The plan was to take her out and about throughout summer and introduce hunting, but since i fell pregnant shes had the time off. Hoping to bring her back to work in Feb time, do a bit of schooling and introduce jumping. In june she is off to spend a few months with my mum being a happy hack so i can concentrate on backing my welsh D. Then she will be back for me in September ready to start the cubbing season whilst the D gets turned away for winter. :)

My appy x was a lanky 14hh when I bought him as a 5yo. He's now a 14.3 tank and still growing albeit mostly outwards at 7

yes this is what I was thinking, especially since he grew so much so quickly... I was really careful not to feed anything too substabtial but to base his diet strictly around fibre and a youngstock supplement... hoping for an inch more but not going to be upset if we don't get that.

wow, that is different, yes his body certainly has matured quickly but he still has his baby attitude :D:D

Equines don't stop growing til they are 7 or in a few cases slightly older so yes, anything younger than that is likely to still be growing ;)
yes but its the way they grow isn't it... some visibly 'grow' but others 'shift and tweak' after a certain age...

Aaaaand of course there are those that were bought at 3, 14.2hh, bum high and "sure to grow", that are now rising 15, still bum high, and still 14.2hh.....and just as lovely as if she'd made the 15.1 she was supposed to............
