Going hunting for the first time next Saturday and just wondering if the following will keep me warm enough or I should wear more on my upper half? And if so, what?

* Merino base layer under
* Shires hunting shirt under
* Midweight wool hunting jacket (unlined)
* Body protector on top of everything

Think my breeches are not especially warm, so maybe tights or leggings underneath? Thoughts?

I think you'll be fine.

I was riding in a Polo T-shirt a few weekends ago with my BP on top, if I'm on the move no matter what the weather is like I keep warm, yet I can sit in a warm office on my backside all day and freeze, suppose it depends what your like normally.

BP do tend to keep you warm because they are snug on your body, plus a wool coat and a few layers, your making me huff and puff just thinking about it! :D, but you must be breathable but also absorbs any loss of moisture (should you get a bit sweaty) otherwise you'll catch you death the next day if you've been standing about in a damp sweaty shirt.

Make sure your hands and feet are warm though, don't crush your feet though with loads of socks, that will only make your feet worse, so invest in some good quality thick socks, outdoor shops will have them, there is nothing worse than having a toasty body yet cold hands and feet as that is where the cold tends to bite!

I think you'll be fine on top, I hunt in a base layer, shirt and hunt coat normally and add a v neck jumper if it's chilly. I freeze in just breeches though and can't afford a heavyweight pair of hunt breeches so put a fairly thick pair of tights on under normal breeches and am ok :) My feet still get cold though but I can't get any more than the tights and 1 pair of socks on as my boots are very snug.

Thanks guys! The body protector is non-negotiable due to my crappy back (ankylosing spondylitis) but I wish it were a bit more flattering ;)

Ah vanity vanity, all is vanity!
